Lionsgate-themed venue opened in the first half of 2019

A Hollywood film-themed entertainment facility will open "in the first half of 2019" on Hengchin Island in mainland China next to Macau. It released a press release on Thursday on behalf of Lionsgate Entertainment World.

The facility is "Asia's first film-themed indoor interactive experience" and the Lionsgate brand's first venture.

The rise in out-of-game tourism entertainment in Hengchen to complement existing facilities such as the Chimelong International Marine Tourism Resort, which features hotels and theme parks and is popular with visitors from other parts of mainland China, has been touted as a way to develop a market for so-called two-centre holidays locally.

The idea is to get tourists to spend some of their time in casino-focused Macau markets, while others benefit from both locations in Henqin. Several Macau casino operators, including Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd and MGM China Holdings Ltd, have also come up with plans for non-gaming facilities in Henqin, but so far none have come to fruition.

Lionsgate – full name Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation – is a major Hollywood film and entertainment company that owns a number of film franchises, including "The Hunger Games," "Divergent," and "Now You See Me." The film's theme and others will be screened at the facility, the announcement said. Details of exactly what type of entertainment the new facility will offer were short, although it mentioned that it will cover 22,000 sq m (236,806 sq ft) and there will be Lionsgate-themed cafes and some shops.

Selena Magill (pictured, far left), general manager of Lionsgate Entertainment World, announced, "Lionsgate Entertainment World aims to become a multi-faceted destination by attracting guests through storytelling as well as encouraging participation and social activities with many opportunities for personalization." She spoke at the premiere at the local authorities of Zhuhai and Hengchin, the mainland cities right next to Macau.

The new entertainment facility will be in a development zone known as Novotown Hengqin. A press release on Thursday confirmed Hong Kong-based conglomerate Lai Sun Group is an investor in Novotown Hengqin.

In a July 2016 announcement on the expected engagement of the Lionsgate brand, it mentioned the opening of the facility this year and the possibility of 5 million visitors a year.

According to a 2016 announcement, Novotown Hungchin is being developed by Zhuhai Hungchin License Creative Culture City Limited. At the time, Lai Feng Holdings Inc. owned 80% of the company, and Yi Sun Holdings owned the remaining 20%. Both companies are members of the licensing group.

The island itself, also known as the Hung-chien New District and part of mainland China's Guangdong pilot free trade zone, aims to attract inward investment not only from home but also from abroad.
