Wakayama, the leader of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, urged prefectural governor Yoshinobu Nishaka not to start community consultations on Wakayama's casino resort district development plan until details of the project consortium and how to fund it become clear to the public.
According to GGRAsia's Japan correspondent, the call was made on Wednesday, the first day of Q&A between lawmakers and the Wakayama government regarding regional policies on casino business.
Clairvest Nem Ventures KK is an order consortium of proposed request schemes at Wakayama in Integrated Resorts (IR).
The current government said it would delay releasing a draft global development plan until the issues mentioned last month became clear.
U.S.-based casino operator Caesars Entertainment said in September it would be a partner in the ClareBest Nim Ventures consortium, although it "has no capital commitment."
"The most important thing" is who will proceed with the project to present a draft of the Wakayama district development plan, namely forming a consortium and how the group will finance the development, the Liberal Democrat leader said.
The Wakayama project has a budget of 470 billion yen ($4.14 billion). In the process of liberalization, up to three casino resorts will be allowed in Japan.
A Liberal Democratic Party spokesperson for Wakayama council noted that the party "strongly asks the prefecture to present and explain the draft to the prefecture's people" only if the consortium structure and funding were "definitely established".
The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is the main party of the Wakayama Prefectural Council and a group of leaders at the national level. The LDP has supported the creation of a large casino complex to boost inbound tourism in Japan.
The anti-casino community group in the city of Wakayama said it had received enough signatures from local voters for their right to ask the government for consent to a referendum on whether the city should aim to host casino resorts in late November.
