“I’m thinking about a nickname.”
Mel Rojas Jr., who returned to the KT Wiz after four years, is preparing for the 2024 season. Rojas arrived at Incheon International Airport on January 29th and immediately went to Gijang Hyundai Dream Ball Park, KT's spring training site, to prepare for a successful return to the KBO League.
At the time of entering Korea, Rojas said, "I am so excited to return to Korea. There are so many things I look forward to. I also received offers from other teams, but I considered Korea my second home. I thought it was natural to choose KT in Korea." reported.
Rojas met with reporters at spring camp on the 4th and opened up about his current physical condition. He moves individually ahead of the training start time and is warming up by conducting personal training.
Rojas said, "I am training normally. My physical condition is also very good. Although I am limited due to the bad weather, I am doing well according to the environment. When training in Korea, I preferred to come out first and train alone. When it comes to swing, I am alone." “I prefer to work in an environment where I can concentrate, so I showed up early and trained with the coach,” he said.
This season, KT's cleanup trio is likely to consist of Rojas, Park Byung-ho, and Kang Baek-ho. Rojas has experience working with Kang Baek-ho, but this is his first time working with Park Byeong-ho. He is excited about forming a cleanup trio with the KBO League's leading slugger.
Rojas said, "We talk a lot about what we can say to each other. It helps a lot. If all three are in good condition, I think they will be stronger than any team's central batting line. Of course, if I do my job, the rest will be stronger." "I think both players will do well. I'm looking forward to the season. I think they'll be a strong trio, but I'm thinking about what nickname to use."
Rojas recorded 192 hits, 47 home runs, 135 RBI, and 116 runs in 142 games in the 2020 season, with a batting average of 0.349 and an OPS of 1.097, ranking first in home runs, RBI, runs, and slugging percentage (0.680). He became the first switch hitter home run king in the KBO, and the MVP went to him as well.
Afterwards, Rojas left KT and joined the Hanshin Tigers of the Japanese professional baseball team. Meanwhile, KT recorded its first overall championship since its founding and advanced to the Korean Series last season, establishing itself as a strong team.
Regarding KT before leaving and the current KT, Rojas said, "I don't think the players were bad before, but I think KT is strong enough to win now. I think it's a stronger team than ever," and "It's going to be like that from now on." “I think it looks good. As we train together, I feel like this is a team that can win more,” he said.
