What is Lipase test?

Facebook Twitter

A lipase test is a laboratory test that measures the level of lipase, an enzyme involved in the digestion of fats, in the blood. Lipase is primarily produced by the pancreas, and it helps break down dietary fats into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body.

The lipase test is often used to diagnose and monitor conditions related to the pancreas, such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). When the pancreas is damaged or inflamed, lipase is released into the bloodstream in higher amounts than usual, leading to elevated lipase levels.
Elevated lipase levels can also be caused by other conditions, such as pancreatic cancer, gallbladder inflammation, certain gastrointestinal disorders, or even non-pancreatic sources like kidney disease or certain medications. Therefore, the lipase test is often combined with other diagnostic tests, such as amylase (another enzyme) and imaging studies, to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of pancreatic and digestive health.
