Cartoon: Freeze! Zoom! Enhance! Turn Lead Into Gold! It’s getting to be a joke: the magic things cops can do with computers. “Wait – there’s a reflection in the teakettle! Magnify! Enhance! Now pull a DNA sample from the image! I don’t care, just do it – boost the power if you have to! Crossmatch it with every person named Brent in the continental United States! Damn, this new version of GIMP rocks!” Annnnd… DING! We’ve grown to accept this, partly because without these little storytelling cheats our streets would be crawling with fictitious master criminals executing horrific, if imaginary, atrocities. But maybe what really sells us on the idea of magic high tech down at the precinct is that, deep down, we kind of wish it were true (never mind the bladder-emptying implications for civil liberties and privacy).
And maybe, just maybe, that technology could trickle down to, say, the prosumer market. More Noise to Signal. DIY hot tub. House Style. What style do we like for house accessories and furnishings? And what styles are there, for that matter? In selecting accesories and furnishings for our 50-year-old cape house, we’ve found ourselves needing to select small-scale accessories (like towel bars for the bathrooms, doorknobs for the downstairs rooms, and the like) and large scale (kitchen tables, couches, kitchen cabinets). Problem is, we don’t have an overarching “vision” of what our house will look like or what style will predominate, so we often end up selecting items that are pretty generic so that the items don’t clash with a style established later on down the line sometime. I’m worried that this is going to leave us with a bland, boring house decor. My idea for how to remedy this is to select a few styles that we really like, which will not only guide us in choices large and small, but will also enable us to select items that are more distinctive, without the fear that they will clash.

Rail Spikes: Why programmers should play Go. Software development is the art of managing complexity using a limited number of rules, structures, and patterns. Programmers should play Go. Go in 28 words or less. The beauty of Go is its combination of simplicity and complexity. On the one hand, go has only a handful of rules. Place stones, don’t get completely surrounded, control territory. While chess is quite complex and rich, such that it took a 30-node supercomputer to defeat the reining chess champion, no computer comes close to defeating even a skilled amateur Go player.
Managing complexity So how does one play Go, given this near-infinite complexity? But there’s more: Go has several sorts of patterns. Finally, there are joseki. Patterns in Go, patterns in software design Each of these Go patterns has a rough programming analogue. Shapes in Go aren’t unlike software design patterns. Go proverbs are like another type of pattern in software: CapitalizedPrinciples (for lack of a better term) made popular by Extreme Programming.
Salted Caramel Ice Cream Recipe at Epicurious. Photo by Romulo Yanes yield Makes about 1 quart active time 30 min total time 4 hr It might seem odd to describe something cold—ice cream—as sultry, but there is no denying genuine come-hither appeal. Preparation Heat 1 cup sugar in a dry 10-inch heavy skillet over medium heat, stirring with a fork to heat sugar evenly, until it starts to melt, then stop stirring and cook, swirling skillet occasionally so sugar melts evenly, until it is dark amber. Add 1 1/4 cups cream (mixture will spatter) and cook, stirring, until all of caramel has dissolved. Meanwhile, bring milk, remaining cup cream, and remaining 1/4 cup sugar just to a boil in a small heavy saucepan, stirring occasionally. Lightly whisk eggs in a medium bowl, then add half of hot milk mixture in a slow stream, whisking constantly. Chill custard, stirring occasionally, until very cold, 3 to 6 hours. Cooks' note: Ice cream keeps 1 week.

Question: I have a crushing inability to write proper thank-you notes. Can you offer me some guidelines? —Helen Answer: I was wondering when you were going to ask that question, and frankly, I’m a little disappointed it took you so long. Somewhere in between your mom making you sit down with your Peanuts® stationery and you shooting off an email, you completely lost touch with the concept of simple thank-you notes. Grandma might not say anything to you, but trust me: She and her friends are probably at this very moment sighing over how young people today just don’t have manners.
As extra motivation, I will also grudgingly tell you the hidden secret of thank-you notes: They improve the frequency and quality of the gifts you receive. I assure you, writing thank-yous is easier than you remember. If you want to know when you get a genuine pass on writing a note, the litmus test is simple: Do I live under the same roof as the giver? 1. Dear Aunt Sally, 2. Thank you so much for the slippers. 3. Spicy caramel popcorn. Yesterday was brutally cold and windy in New York City and although I generally tune out when people complain about being bored, I was. I admit it. Jacob and I take a walk somewhere, anywhere — seriously, I may or may not have used “Let’s go buy mama some bourbon!”
As an excuse to leave the apartment one recent day — everyday. Even if it is cold; that’s what the snowsuit and hat and footmuff and knit blanket (“We lost the baby!”) Are for, right? But yesterday’s weather bested us, and it was a long morning of This Is New York, Tiny Monkey and Jacob chewing on his girlfriend Sophie’s ears before I said, “That’s it! It turned out to be an excellent idea. It is salty. One year ago: Sugar-and-Spice Candied Nuts Oh you should really make these too! Yuletide gift tags: a blender pen tutorial. Hello! Becka here again with a quick festive tutorial for you all! I was first introduced to the blender pen by my husband, who used one to illustrate a small book for me for our first Valentines Day together. I had stamped a Muji passport with various different meaningful words, song lyrics, etc and when I came back from a trip to the states he had filled it with whimsical illustrations of old sail ships, vintage etchings and the like. I was amazed at how easy it was to transfer and manipulate images using the pen, and it quickly became a craft supply staple! This year I have used it to create some simple gift tags, and I really love the simplicity of the black lettering with brown paper and string wrapped presents.
A blender pen traditionally does just that, blends. Step One: Loosening Cut out your image, and place it face down on the surface you wish to transfer it onto. Step two: Burnishing Now, how soon you move onto step two will depend slightly on your blender pen. Voila! OLPC Comes Up With a Beautiful, Thin Tablet Concept. Experiments in Sincerity < Killing the Buddha. “Isn’t there enough irreverence in the world?” Bob Dylan I was twenty-five or so at a mid-nineties Nashville Christmas party with my peers. This is Nashville we’re talking about. So when it comes to people who’ve moved into town with big ideas or even a casually asserted “When the Lord called me here…” to pursue something or other (music, ministry, performance, a heart for people in show business), it’s a throw-a-rock-and-you’ll-hit-one type of situation.
Otherwise you’re a native who has been raised hearing this sort of thing. The alcohol was flowing (a sure sign, for some, that everyone present had decidedly turned over a new leaf), and one particularly boisterous fellow in a corner started singing Christmas songs. It is in the hope of such moments that I, for one, reach for the iPod, gaze curiously upon vinyl collections, and stand in crowded corners listening to people perform music. A favorite moment of mine occurs in “San Bernadino.” Buy the album. How To: Make Custom Magazine Files | Apartment Therapy San Francisco. (Welcome to Monika, who is trying out for a spot on the AT:SF editorial team. Enjoy her post!) Since we love design, arts and crafts and collecting things from across the ages, we run into a problem of storage on a daily basis. We have looked for a good solution and have improved our situation with a custom built wall shelf in our loft that is 16 ft wide by 11 ft tall, but we have been looking for a system to organize its contents for awhile now.
Having gone to many different stores in the Bay Area, we decided that to be most efficient we would have to embark on a journey to create our own boxes. This turned out not only to be the most cost and space efficient solution, but also the most flexible since we could decide on the sizes of our boxes as well as the colors and the details. The Bare Bones It took some time to figure out what size would work the best for the bookshelf. After that was done, we chose a palette of three solid colors.

Every week, guest author George Hart, from the newly-formed Museum of Mathematics, will post a fun, experiential, puzzling little item, exploring some intriguing aspect of mathematics. The Math Museum is dedicated to raising people’s awareness of the wondrous mathematical patterns and structures that exist all around us.
They do this through such experiential means as their Math Midway, a traveling circus of hands-on exhibitions, that brings math to life in tangible and fun ways… and now, through a weekly column on MAKE. And that's exactly what they are, notepads and/or journals (hard bound, hard wired & saddle-stitched) with white lines versus dark. The novelty is that the lines are clearly visible without disturbing what you write, which a traditional writing paper with dark lines does. They also have a toned background that makes it easier on the eyes. and the lines easily disappear when you copy, scan or fax. "Swedish innovation for improved reading and writing". Whitelines.se. Can they get stuff done? Can you work with them? Someone who’s smart but doesn’t get stuff done should be your friend, not your employee.
You can talk your problems over with them while they procrastinate on their actual job. Someone who gets stuff done but isn’t smart is inefficient: non-smart people get stuff done by doing it the hard way and working with them is slow and frustrating. The traditional programmer hiring process consists of: a) reading a resume, b) asking some hard questions on the phone, and c) giving them a programming problem in person. So when I hire people, I just try to answer the three questions. To find out whether someone’s smart, I just have a casual conversation with them. But if I had to write down what it is that makes someone seem smart, I’d emphasize three things. Second, are they curious? Third, do they learn? Yup. posted by Russell L. . +1.
