What is a spinal cord injury (SCI)?

Facebook Twitter

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that can cause a loss of sensation, movement, and function below the level of the injury.

The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs from the brain through the vertebral column, or spine, and carries signals between the brain and the rest of the body.

SCI can be caused by a traumatic injury, such as a car accident, fall, or sports injury, or by a non-traumatic injury, such as a tumor, infection, or degenerative disease.
