Facebook Acquires Video Compression Startup QuickFire. Instagram’s First Acquisition Is Video Sharing App Luma. Instagram has just made its first acquisition, buying both the team and technology of Y Combinator company Luma (formerly known as Midnox). Luma created a video-capture, stabilization and sharing app, which will be shut down soon. In fact, one source tells us Luma’s stabilization technology is already live in Instagram.
Luma’s iOS app has been pulled from the App Store but existing users will continue to be supported until December 31, 2013. Users can download their videos here. We were tipped off to the acquisition, and Facebook has since confirmed that it is Instagram’s first, and the deal is for both talent and technology. The Luma team writes: “Eighteen months ago, we embarked on a mission to make capturing and sharing beautiful videos easy without expensive software or heavy equipment. Unlike the rash of acqui-hires in Silicon Valley, this deal comes with Luma’s technology. The acquisition highlights the increasing differentiation in product and strategy of Vine and Instagram. AWS Adds Elastic Transcoder. Amazon Web Services is now hawking Amazon Elastic Transcoder, described as a highly scalable service for transcoding video files between different digital media formats that's supposed to save users a lot of time and money by eliminating complexity. Amazon said customers can use the stuff to convert their large high-resolution "master" video files into smaller versions optimized for playback on web sites, mobile devices, connected TVs and other video platforms.
Elastic Transcoder apparently removes the need to manage infrastructure and transcoding software, providing scalability and performance by leveraging AWS services. The service manages all aspects of the transcoding process transparently and automatically. It also supports pre-defined transcoding presets that make it easy to transcode video for smartphones, tablets, web browsers and other devices. Customers are charged based on the number of minutes they need to transcode and the selected resolution.
La 4K devient l'Ultra High Definition. La HD sera donc suivie par... l'Ultra HD, ou plutôt, l'Ultra High Definition. Cette résolution de 3840 x 2160 pixels, autrefois identifiée en tant que 4K, ayant été adoubée par la Consumer Electronics Association. La décision provient de la Consumer Electronics Association : désormais, le terme 4K n’a plus raison d’être, puisqu’il est remplacé par celui (plus pompeux, de notre avis) d’Ultra High Definition, qui vient tout bêtement prendre la relève de l’actuelle HD. Cette Ultra HD étant au moins régulée par 2 critères : une résolution de 3820 x 2160 pixels et un aspect de 16:9, au minimum.
L’upconverting n’étant bien évidemment pas autorisé lorsque l’on évoque l’Ultra HD. Quand bien même, on s’attend à voir débouler les premières modèles Ultra HD abordables d’ici quelques mois. Remarquez, c’est plutôt une bonne chose que l’industrie semble abandonner la 3D, pour se focaliser sur un gain en résolution bien plus probant. High performance access to file storage With tech companies abandoning the proprietary Flash and Silverlight media players for HTML5, it was inevitable somebody would try to inject DRM into the virgin spec. Microsoft, Google and Netflix are that “somebody”, having submitted a proposed modification to HTML5 to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for “encrypted media extensions”. Their proposed addition, detailed here and picked apart here, has drawn a flat rejection from HTML5 editor and Google employee Ian Hickson, who’s called the encrypted media extensions unethical.
Hickson wrote in response to Microsoft’s Adrian Bateman who floated the proposal on Monday: “I believe this proposal is unethical and that we should not pursue it.” Batemen said “many” content and application providers reckon they can’t use the <audio> and <video> elements in HTML5 because they “lack robust content protection”. Hier, YouTube a mis en place sa nouvelle fonctionnalité : l’édition directe de vos vidéos sur depuis le site.
Pour l’utiliser, cliquez simplement sur le nouveau bouton “Modifier la vidéo” qui apparaît maintenant sur les pages de vos propres vidéos. Vous arrivez alors sur une page comportant un menu à trois onglets (Corrections rapides, Effets et Audio). Au centre, votre vidéo et une seconde servant d’aperçu rapide de l’application des différentes modifications proposées. Parmi celles-ci on retrouve des réglages basiques tels que le rognage, la rotation (très pratique pour les vidéos capturées avec un téléphone), ainsi que les niveaux de luminosité, contraste, saturation et température. But by looking at what Google’s competitors are offering, you can get a sense of what’s in play. Google seems to want something much more than that, and is willing to pay much more to get it.
And in large part, Google has. Still, Hulu’s owners don’t seem entirely convinced that they want to sell the site at all. Apple begins refunding unhappy Final Cut Pro X customers - TNW Apple. When Apple launched the long-awaited update to industry-leading video editing software Final Cut Pro, many people couldn’t wait to jump onto the Mac App Store to download a copy. As customers began using the software, it quickly became apparent that the new version of Final Cut Pro X wasn’t meeting user expectations; support for older file types was no longer available, functions became difficult to find and audio markers no longer work “the way they used to”. This led to many customers leaving 1-star ratings and lengthy negative reviews on the Mac App Store – it even got blasted by Conan O’Brien. It seems Apple has been reading the reviews and is in partial agreement with some customers as it has begun issuing refunds to those who have filed an official request using Apple’s Mac App Store Customer Service form.
You would think that it was normal for Apple to refund purchases but the company’s terms and conditions states that ‘all sales are final’. Good news for many. Apple just officially unveiled the new version of the Final Cut suite at the Final Cut Pro Supermeet during the National Association of Broadcasters trade show 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The new version, called Final Cut Pro X, was rebuilt from ground up to run on 64-bit.
The new Final Cut software, according to MacStories, is touted as “revolutionary as the first version” from 1999. It’s a 64-bit complete rewrite of the widely used pro video editing software that is based on technologies like Cocoa, Core Animation, Open CL, Grand Central Dispatch, which can utilize up to 8 cores, and it focuses on image quality. Aside from having a new user interface, it features a resolution independent playback system up to 4K for scalable rendering. It borrows a lot of UI elements from iMovie such as the smart collections of clips, which makes the design appealing for amateurs and professionals alike. It is currently in beta version and will be available on the Mac App Store in June for $299. Adobe launches premium video authentication software. SOFTWARE OUTFIT Adobe Systems has launched a premium video authentication application, Adobe Pass, to allow subscribers easy access to premium TV content on any Internet-connected device.
The software makes use of Flash and HTML5 for delivering an easy to use "TV Everywhere" service, with HTML5 used alone when Flash is not available, such as on Apple devices. It will work on many operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS, Android, IOS, Blackberry OS and Google TV. Adobe has teamed up with a number of TV businesses to push for success with Adobe Pass. These include Turner Broadcasting System, MTV Networks, Comcast and Synacor. The company cited the rapid growth in the smartphone, tablet and smart TV sectors as a primary reason behind Adobe Pass. Adobe tried to deflect security concerns regarding Flash by saying that Flash Player 10.1 features improved fraud prevention thanks to it binding the user to their device.
YouTube Partners With LG on Mobile 3D Videos - PCWorld. YouTube is working with LG Electronics to make it easier for users to capture 3D images and video on mobile devices and upload directly to the Internet with LG's new Optimus 3D smartphone. The Optimus 3D, which uses Google's Android mobile operating system, features a dual-lens camera for 3D image and video capture.
That video can be directly uploaded to YouTube via a dedicated YouTube 3D video application, said Nanako Kato, an LG spokeswoman. The Optimus 3D's 4.3-inch touchscreen also lets users view 3D images and video without using glasses. "The new partnership is part of a broader push into 3D entertainment by LG and the world's largest online video community," the companies said in a joint statement.
"YouTube and LG collaborated to enable the delivery and sharing of 3D video onto mobile devices in a way that makes it simple and easy for consumers. " YouTube started providing a place for 3D video in July 2009 at the YouTube 3D Gallery, and even sells special 3D glasses on the site. MPEG envisages royalty-free MPEG video coding standard. N’en déplaise à Apple (Safari) et Microsoft (Internet Explorer), il est sans surprise question de soutenir l’Ogg Theora pour lequel la fondation Mozilla se bat férocement.
