How to Grow a Garden You'll Actually Use

But many people who are totally excited about the idea of growing their own food are also totally overwhelmed at knowing how to start or knowing what to grow. Or you’re like me and get so excited as you pour over seed catalogs each spring that you end up planting way too many varieties and come August, there’s too much food to deal with! So, how about this: forget what you think you should grow, and grow only what you’ll use over and over and over again all season long.

For example, I love our morning green smoothies, but it gets expensive FAST if I only use store-bought frozen fruit – like pineapple, mango, and berries – and if I buy all our kale. How Do You Create A Culture Of Innovation? This is the third part in a series by Scott Anthony, author of The Little Black Book Of Innovation.

How Do You Create A Culture Of Innovation?

It sounds so seductive: a “culture of innovation.” The three words immediately conjure up images of innovation savants like 3M, Pixar, Apple, and Google--the sorts of places where innovation isn’t an unnatural act, but part of the very fabric of a company. The Necessary Art of Persuasion. If there ever was a time for businesspeople to learn the fine art of persuasion, it is now.

The Necessary Art of Persuasion

Gone are the command-and-control days of executives managing by decree. Today businesses are run largely by cross-functional teams of peers and populated by baby boomers and their Generation X offspring, who show little tolerance for unquestioned authority. Electronic communication and globalization have further eroded the traditional hierarchy, as ideas and people flow more freely than ever around organizations and as decisions get made closer to the markets. These fundamental changes, more than a decade in the making but now firmly part of the economic landscape, essentially come down to this: work today gets done in an environment where people don’t just ask What should I do?

But Why should I do it? To answer this why question effectively is to persuade. Think for a moment of your definition of persuasion. What, then, constitutes effective persuasion? Four Essential Steps. The Necessary Art of Persuasion. Cette femme a décidé de regarder plusieurs échantillons de larmes au microscope. Elle a découvert une réalité troublante... Constructing Caliphal Identity in Fatimid North Africa: Taking a Close Look at al-Mahdiyya and al-Mansuriyya

I’m giving a presentation in about a week on architecture and meaning in Islamic Africa. I decided to choose, with the help of my friend, who knows far more about this subject than I probably ever will, the topic of two abandoned Fatimid cities in North Africa and how their construction contributed to the way the empire and its leaders thought of themselves for years to come. As part of this assignment, I must also submit a small paper (of about 10 pages or so) and I decided that I would do my research on this blog, writing down anything I can amalgamate into a sizable and coherent blogpost. The Construction of Fatimid Caliphal Identity: A Comparison between al-Mahdiyya and al-Mansuriyya in the Tenth Century The Fatimids are most often thought about within their Egyptian context, but their formative period took place in North Africa.

This list has been expanded into the new book, “Wired to Create: Unravelling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind,” by Carolyn Gregoire and Scott Barry Kaufman. Creativity works in mysterious and often paradoxical ways. Creative thinking is a stable, defining characteristic in some personalities, but it may also change based on situation and context.

Inspiration and ideas often arise seemingly out of nowhere and then fail to show up when we most need them, and creative thinking requires complex cognition yet is completely distinct from the thinking process. Neuroscience paints a complicated picture of creativity. As scientists now understand it, creativity is far more complex than the right-left brain distinction would have us think (the theory being that left brain = rational and analytical, right brain = creative and emotional).

While there’s no “typical” creative type, there are some tell-tale characteristics and behaviors of highly creative people. They daydream. Islamic Medical Manuscripts: Bio-Bibliographies - I. Ibn ‘Abd al-Muṭṭalib (or al-Muṭlib), Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh (fl. before 1546/953)محمد ابن عبد الله ابن عبد المطلب Nothing is known of this author except that he wrote a Persian treatise on magical medical procedures, extracts of which are preserved in a unique copy now at NLM (MS P 29, marginal item 31).

The treatise is written in the margins of another treatise. The volume bears an owner's stamp dated 1546 (953 H), thereby providing a date before which the otherwise unknown author must have worked. Ibn al-‘Arabi, Muhyi al-Dīn (d. 1240/638) Ibn al-‘Arabi, also known as al-Shaykh al-Akbar, was one of the most celebrated of medieval Islamic mystics (or Sufis). He composed many treatises (over 200 titles are recorded) on numerous topics. For his life and writings, see A. Diglossie.

Younes Hassar « The Majalla Magazine.
