For Stephen Wilkes this meant turning his fascination with the passage of time within a single photograph into a full-scale, fine-art project titled “Day Into Night.”
It comprises digital composites he outputs as limited edition, gallery prints sized at 30 x 40 and 48 x 60 inches. Wilkes made the first image in the series in 2009 when he was on assignment for New York Magazine in downtown Manhattan. To get the shot he wanted—an epic overview of the High Line that still retained intimacy and a human connection—Wilkes photographed from about 40 or 50 feet off the ground in a cherry picker. Using a 4 x 5 camera with a 39-megapixel digital back, Wilkes rotated his camera manually—because the scene was so expansive as it moved from south to north—from atop a tripod throughout the day. On déjeune ensemble, histoire de se rencontrer autrement que par blogs interposés ou de nos échanges sur twitter. Je connais Christophe par son travail dans le domaine des paysages mais aussi pour ses shootings studio, en externe mais aussi en studio, c’est un pro du post-traitement (je vous conseille son blog et ses tutos d’ailleurs). Je lui fais part qu’en novembre 2011, je m’étais frotté à cet exercice avec NSO Photo, mais que j’étais resté sur ma faim même si j’avais obtenu d’assez bons résultats de mon point de vue : matériel en deçà de ce que j’attendais mais surtout, pas de modèles (féminins), nous avions joué entre nous (4 photographes) à nous relayer pour être le sujet.
