A Lack of Confessions. On Tuesday night in Canberra I went along to the book signing of Paul Howes’s book “Confessions of a Faceless Man: Inside Campaign 2010”.

A Lack of Confessions

At the launch he made some good points about the ALP – that they need to examine doing away with the binding caucus vote; that a price on carbon will raise the prices of electricity – that’s the bloody point; and that it’s time the ALP got with the 21st century on the issue of gay marriage. He also made some typical ALP-LNP-Media points about the Greens – namely in the next few years they’ll be a lot of fun to watch as they argue over whether or not they compromise on issues. I had a quick chat to him after he spoke and he came across as he generally does on TV – smart, personable and knowledgeable of the working of politics. I look forward to Howes writing a book that reveals these qualities, because Confessions of a Faceless Man doesn’t do it. But that is being churlish. It is instead pretty innocuous, and worst of all, lacking insight. Please. Latham's job on Howes - Unleashed. Find More Stories Latham's job on Howes Bob Ellis Declaring my interest, I've written lines for Latham and speeches for Howes and called each, in different books, a future prime minister.

Latham didn't turn up to debate me on the economy once, but I defended his right, as a citizen, to confront his former employee Gillard on a street-walk as I would have, say, defended John Hewson's right to bowl up to his former employee Abbott with a bunch of cameras and say, "Mate, can I ask you a couple of questions?

" That said though, I found Latham's attack on Howes's campaign diary , lately launched in the Golden Century by Richo, very peculiar. He first compares him to Rex Mossop whose use of big words, often inaccurately, showed, he said, the nervousness of an undereducated man. He next suggests Paul's changes of ideology from Trotskyist (as 14) to pro-US, pro-Israeli right-wing Labor (at 20) come from a yearning for a cushy job in the AWU. Can this be so? After getting the announcement from Paul Howes of the imminent publication of his “miserable little pamphlet“, I thought I’d get my hands on a copy and review it.

Unlike the Canberra Press Gallery, who produced reviews of the book mere hours after it was released – presumably skimming through to the index to find the “dirt” – I spent a leisurely three days reading it while traveling to and from work on the train. Dr_tad Confessions faceless. I’ve written a piece on how no-one seems to want to come to terms with the homegrown nature of the current terrorist threat in Australia.

In scenes reminiscent of the Arab Spring uprisings, 30,000 college students and supporters occupied streets in Hong Kong’s central financial district, encircled by riot police armed with […] Lunch with Richo and the Faceless Man: launching Labor’s progressive manifesto. Lunch with Richo and the Faceless Man: launching Labor’s progressive manifesto

Following yesterday’s lunch at the Golden Century restaurant in Sussex Street, held after Paul Howes’ book launch, I resolved to eat Chinese food only in the company of the NSW Right. After Richo tucked his linen napkin into his shirtfront, muttering “just bring the usual”, a mountain of crustaceans and barramundi appeared, accompanied by gallons of the white infuriator.

This may explain why Sam Dastyari is the only lean and hungry member of this faction, I thought idly, popping another spring roll into my mouth. Booktopia. Australian Workers Union national secretary Paul Howes has produced a tell-all account from inside the Rudd-Gillard Labor bunker.

Picture: Adam Head Source: The Australian Union chief Paul Howes saw it all as the Rudd government imploded and the ALP struggled to remain in power PAUL Howes was spending a rare early evening at home when he received a telephone call from a senior federal cabinet minister last June, telling him the leadership challenge to Kevin Rudd was on, and could he decide his position in the next 30 minutes. Hours later, Howes, national secretary of the Australian Workers Union, went on national television to declare his support for Julia Gillard.

As Howes acknowledges now, he had committed the cardinal sin of backroom politics, making himself part of the story. I would not be greatly surprised if my suspicion that Rudd is the leaker is proven right. Unfortunately, this year, it was a bit spoiled by the toxic presence of a bitter and twisted Rudd. How wrong I was.
