Denis Podalydès sera Nicolas Sarkozy dans La Conquête. L'info, qui se murmurait déjà depuis le printemps dernier, a été confirmée ce mardi matin par le journal Le Monde.
Après avoir campé André Malraux dans Un Crime Très Populaire et Claude Mauriac dans Le Grand Charles, Denis Podalydès s'attaquera bientôt à un autre monument de la vie politique française en la personne de l'actuel président de la République. En se glissant prochainement dans la peau de Nicolas Sarkozy au cinéma, le célèbre comédien - notamment pensionnaire de la Comédie-Française - voit à 47 ans se présenter devant lui un challenge passionnant. A travers son film, Xavier Durringer veut retracer le parcours d'un homme politique que rien, n'y personne, n'a su arrêter entre sa nomination au Ministère de l'intérieur en 2002 et son éclatante élection à l'Élysée en 2007. George W Bush had the honors with Oliver Stone’s W in 2008, and equally controversial French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s political life is now the subject of La Conquête (The Conquest). Described as a thriller, it follows his ambitious rise to power. La Conquête recounts the events between April 27, 2002 and May 6, 2007 and follows Nicolas Sarkozy’s political career, thirst for power and concludes with his ultimate conquest: the presidency of France. Producers Eric and Nicolas Altmayer initially wanted François Ozon (Swimming Pool, Potiche) to helm the film, but they finally chose Xavier Durringer. Denis Podalydès dons a wig and plays a very convincing Sarko, as the French call him. Some of the performances may seem like caricatures, but that may be due to the trailer.

He might be even less now that the official poster of La Conquête has been released. And it may offer some hints on the tone of the film. The image is full of symbolism and mockery, the most obvious one being his small size – Sarkozy’s detractors and almost everyone I know in France often make fun of his height. Perched on a very high stool, a metaphor for both his great ambitions and high functions, his head is cut off as if to say we don’t need to see his face to know who it is.

Éric et Nicolas Altmayer, les producteurs du film le plus attendu de l'année, reviennent sur un projet "risqué". Des bureaux discrets dans le 11ème arrondissement de Paris, décorés aux couleurs des productions de la maison. La planche de surf de 'Brice de Nice' côtoie l'affiche de 'Potiche' et le portrait de Denis Podalydès dans la peau d'un certain Nicolas Sarkozy, héros du film 'La Conquête', de Xavier Durringer, dont on ne sait pas encore s'il sera présenté à Cannes. C'est ici, au cœur de l'entreprise « Mandarin Cinéma », que les frères Altmayer, Eric et Nicolas, mitonnent depuis une quinzaine d'années des projets qui bousculent les conformismes du cinéma français.
