Dragon Ball Z Kai. Remastering Vegeta recolored in Kai!

Dragon Ball Z Kai

The original Dragon Ball Z series was infamous for being filled with episode-long power up sequences and a great deal of filler. The main reason for this was that Toei Animation was creating the anime concurrently with the manga and would often catch up to Akira Toriyama. Since there was no way to overtake the manga, the series would extend certain scenes a great deal, or just add filler scenes, such as the infamous driving school episodes.

The filler bumped up the series to a paltry 291 episodes, that was released in Japan, fully remastered frame by frame, in a box set known as the Dragonbox. Toei Animation then announced that they would be remastering the series once more for high definition. Goku censorship! The series received some flak however, when Toei not only cut out filler scenes, but also some scenes that were canonical and in the original manga. Dragon Ball GT. Dragon Ball GT is the only series in The Dragon Ball franchise that may be non-canon, as it has no manga and was not created by Akira Toriyama (aside from a few episodes).

Dragon Ball GT

Due to low ratings, Toei Animation decided to cancel Dragon Ball GT. As for Akira Toriyama, he already quit after finishing the manga with the end of Z. He only offered advice and some character designs during the creation of Dragon Ball GT. Goku gained new powers in this series that didn't appear in the original Dragon Ball manga, most of which came after attaining the Super Saiyan 4 transformation. Vegeta also attained the transformation, though without his tail he needed more concentrated blutz waves than those coming from the Moon, so he used a blutz wave machine to trigger the Great Ape transformation and then advance to Super Saiyan 4. If brought together in the presence of the dragon god, Shen Long (Shin Long), these balls will grant a single wish. The two assemble a band of pilgrims, and, with time out for many martial arts tournaments and fights with divine beings, slowly gather the seven orbs. Members include Yamcha the highwayman; his shapeshifting feline partner, Pooal; Oolong the pig; Goku's future wife, Chichi; and Goku's Buddhist classmate, Krillin. They must also fight off other groups, including the Red Ribbon organization, which wishes to change the space-time continuum by destroying Goku. Tiring of his Doctor Slump and seeking a clean break from Western inspirations, creator Akira Toriyama plucked elements from Journey to the West for this follow-up. Dragon Ball: Episode of Bardock.
