Twitter is a fun place to hang out. The official web app might be bland, but there are a whole bunch of third party apps out there to make Twitter special. I have always maintained that if it weren’t for third party apps, Twitter would never have been the cultural and social phenomenon that it is today. We use Twitter for a variety of personal and professional reasons and the platform by itself isn’t flexible enough for our needs. So after the break, we have compiled a list of 20 apps that fill a dozen holes in the Twitter platform.

5 Powerful Twitter Research Tools [List]

http://www.pluggd.in/best-twitter-research-tools-297/ Twitter has a wealth of information, news and opinions on every topic imaginable. Identifying and separating what is relevant, interesting or actionable is a tough task but fortunately there are numerous tools that help us navigate through the Twittersphere. There is not a single Twitter app or tool that satisfies all research needs. Most of my Twitter use happens through the iPad Twitter app or Tweetdeck on my laptop. But there are still times when it is necessary to go beyond those platforms to find and research information or people and to engage in conversations relevant to your area of interest. I have categorized Twitter research tools into 5 broad areas and selected tools that help analyse data and user behaviour, identify influencers, and engage with people.

With the latest release of Sweeper, you can roll your own bookmarking service. This is really powerful when you start activating plugins like our auto-tagger SiLCC or our our Push plugins which can output all of your bookmarked content as a feed that can be consumed by other applications. We call this little plugin Quiver.

An amazingly powerful new twitter search tool called postpo.st launches

Twitter Search has always been a superbly useful tool but it does have limitations when it comes to searching old Tweets or links that you have seen in the past. That is where this new tool called Postpo.st steps in and provides a brilliant service. Much as when I first saw Sumize (which turned in to Twitter Search) the first time I used this tool I knew I was on to something special. For all it’s power Twitter is a very instant tool with information disappearing unless you are smart enough to bookmark or favorite individual tweets they are often impossible to find at a later date. Postpo.st lets you search not only your own but your friends’ old tweets and it also lets you segment them down by links or photos. http://www.simplyzesty.com/social-media/twitter/postpo-st-the-incredibly-useful-new-twitter-search-engine/
http://help.twibes.com/twitter-help/having-a-conversation To reply to someone's Tweet, simply put the "@" symbol in front of their username. This makes the tweet appear to them in the reply column of their home page. This is a very useful way of starting conversations with people in order to build relationships (even people who do not follow you will see your @replies, unless they have blocked you). Start a conversation by replying to tweets that you find interesting. What is an @Reply ("at reply")?

Josh Bernoff, a vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research, has risen in thirteen years to become one of America’s most frequently quoted research analysts. One of the main reasons we updated our book Groundswell in a new paperback edition was to provide some advice on corporate uses of Twitter. Two things we said in the original Groundswell (2008) were (1) pick a corporate objective before implementing a social technology strategy and (2) keep an eye on this Twitter thing, it's going to be big. Obviously we were right about Twitter, which has now reached 200 million accounts . The average Tweeter is well worth influencing: an educated 32-year old, more likely male than female, with a household income of $91,000 per year and a high likelihood to influence choices made by friends and family. http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2011/06/what_the_heck_are_we_doing_on.html

The Twitter Trap - NYTimes.com

I don’t mean to be a spoilsport, and I don’t think I’m a Luddite. I edit a newspaper that has embraced new media with creative, prizewinning gusto. I get that the Web reaches and engages a vast, global audience, that it invites participation and facilitates — up to a point — newsgathering. But before we succumb to digital idolatry, we should consider that innovation often comes at a price. And sometimes I wonder if the price is a piece of ourselves. Joshua Foer’s engrossing best seller “Moonwalking With Einstein” recalls one colossal example of what we trade for progress. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/22/magazine/the-twitter-trap.html?_r=3
First I point out some things you may already know…but then I share a secret that very few people seem to know… A chain of Canadian newspapers interviewed me and Scott Stratten ( @UnMarketing ) last month. The topic was “Rules and etiquette of social media.”

How To Stand Out On Twitter | The Nicky Blog

One of my new friends on twitter asked me a question recently asking how she could make good people to follow her. So, in this post I have some ideas on how to get followed, be follow-worthy and stand out on twitter . As I mentioned in this post, twitter is not just about being followed and followed back. A twitter profile boasting of amazing content easily makes an impact. Make a twitter profile that people would gladly follow.

The Twitter HTTPS Setting In Plain English | Bit Rebels

We’ve all seen the tweets over the past few days about the new “HTTPS Only” checkbox in our settings menu in Twitter, but a lot of people still don’t understand what that box means and why it’s there. Bottom line, I think everyone should go in and check that box, and this is why. One of the most common ways a Twitter account can get hacked is through a free public Wi-Fi network that you might innocently access with your laptop when you are at the coffee shop, bookstore or anywhere you set up a mobile office during the day. Most people suspect this is how Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account was hacked last month (of course, others still say that was just a publicity stunt).
I’ve written 1,200 articles here on Bit Rebels, and many of them are about Twitter. It’s a topic that never gets old to me. When I started on Twitter back in 2009, there weren’t very many articles that explained the whole Twitter dynamic. Those of us who were on the site regularly just had to figure it out through trial and error.

The Surprising Discovery About Twitter Retweets | Bit Rebels

I have seen so many posts written about the dynamics of Twitter retweets, and every time I read one, I always want to write my own on the topic. I’m excited I’m finally taking the time to do that.
