It works much like a heavy bag, except that a heavy bag resists being hit initially, and then begins to move so that resistance is lessened. By contrast, the makiwara resists very little at first, but as it bends, the resistance the puncher feels increases exponentially. Makiwara [巻藁] means “roll of straw.” Technically, only the straw pad placed at the top of the post is called a makiwara. The wooden post that the makiwara is attached to is just that: a post. Some rubber and suede to cover the striking area with. The 'give' in the makiwara is subject to the level of steel belting in the tyre. You will find that there will be more give if the wood does not go over the tread area of the tyre but instead ends on the softer area below the tread thus avoiding the 'steel belted area' Place the wood on the tyre and first test that there is enough give in the tyre to prevent injury.

When satisfied you will need to drill 4 holes, 2 in the top and 2 in the bottom corners of the wood and through the tyre. Training Equipment.
