Having planned a trip to Prague I asked the editor of the New York photography magazine Modern Photography what I might do in Prague that would interest her magazine. “If you could bring back some Josef Sudek prints we would probably publish them,” she replied. We entered Sudek’s personal residence, which also housed his darkroom. The broad elements of Sudek’s life were well known among Czechs and later in the photography world beyond the borders of his country.

Sudek was originally a bookbinder. During The First World War he was drafted into the Austro-Hungarian Army in 1915 and served on the Italian Front until he was wounded in the right arm in 1916. Although he had no experience with photography and was one-handed due to his amputation, he was given a camera. After the war he studied photography for two years in Prague under Jaromir Funke. His Army disability pension gave him leeway to make art, and he worked during the 1920s in the romantic Pictorialist style. Sudek's photography is sometimes said to be modernist. Libuše Jarcovjáková takhle vylezla na strom několikrát a většinou se zřítila. Jakmile se vystěhovala za papírovým ženichem do Západního Berlína, srazil ji Mercedes a pětiletý pobyt v nové kultuře zahajovala sama, se sešroubovaným kotníkem a dluhem 5000 DM. Kamarádka, za kterou vycestovala do Tokia, jí zatím, stižená laktační psychózou, v pyžamu domlouvala emigraci, o kterou nikdo nežádal. Kamarádku internovali, ale jen co se Jarcovjáková začala chytat v japonské módní fotografii, vrátila ji vízová politika zpátky do role zimmermädchen, která nemá ani na brikety.
V Praze „mi hned sebrali pas, 'už nepojedeš nikam'. Co ale dokáže vzrušeně zrychlit i skoro zastavit a co vždy zůstává ústřední životní funkcí.
