Have you been in a situation where, how you saw a situation play out in your mind turn out to be the exact opposite in reality? We have all been there, armed with our own pre-response actions; count to 10, breathe, take a moment, etc. But before we know it, the words have left our mouth, or we have acted in a way we never intended to. We carry the responsibility for reading and understanding our thinking and subsequent actions. This responsibility is certainly tested when we are under pressure. Our true selves show up when we are under pressure. By pressure I mean dealing with the unexpected, an external disruption beyond your control such as being sabotaged by a colleague, reprimanded in public, etc. Trying to centre yourself when your mind is racing is like trying to rein in wild horses. I realised then that we are systemic creatures, what we think and how we act has an impact on us and others. What I say here is not new and is common sense. A new study states that we think approximately 6200 thoughts per day.
Old research stated that we had between 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day, where 80% were negative and 95% were repeated from the day before. I am not writing to dispute these numbers or the methods of measurement. 6000 or 60,000 we think many thoughts per day. But, to meaningfully navigate the future, we need to inject new thinking into our daily activities. I spend time, my hobby, in the wilderness doing outdoor activities mainly mountain biking and cycle touring.
These can be anything from a day trip to 21 days when I did the Munda Biddi Trail in Western Australia. We are all facing some form of physical isolation. Those lucky are in lockdown with their family, whilst others are alone by choice or circumstance. One thing is certain, this is the most amount of time we have spent with ourselves. From the feedback I am getting, it has not been a smooth journey so far.
