Amazon Appstore more lucrative for many devs than Android Market. Investment in Amazon Appstore is paying off in a big way for many top developers, a good chunk of whom are pulling in more money for their apps on Amazon than through Google’s Android Market. App analytics firm Distimo, in its latest monthly report, laid out how despite its much smaller collection of apps, the Appstore is becoming a lucrative place for app makers to do business. Distimo said that of the top 110 apps that appear in both the Android Market and Amazon Appstore, 42 of them make more money on Amazon than on Android Market. Overall, 28 percent of the revenue in those top apps came from the Appstore. That’s a big showing for an Appstore that is less than one year old and has 26,826 available applications, compared to more than 400,000 worldwide for Android Market, according to Distimo. Amazon Appstore is turning out to be a great place for paid app downloads, compared to Android Market which monetizes better through in-app purchase.

Apple Passes 45B Total Unique App Downloads At A Rate Of 800 Per Second With Over $9B Paid To Devs. Apple took time to update investors on the status of its ecosystem on today’s call, revealing that it has crossed the 45 billion total app download mark, just over four months after it crossed the 40 billion download mark back in January. Apps are being downloaded at a rate of 800 per second, from a total pool of 850,000 iOS apps in total, with 350,000 apps designed for iPad alone.

That 350,000 is the same as the number of total iOS apps reported by Apple as of January 2011, just a year after the launch of the iPad. At the time, Apple had only 60,000 iPad apps, which means iPad-specific titles have seen a 483 percent increase in the intervening years. Apple also revealed that it has App Stores in 155 countries, covering 90 percent of the total iOS user population, and that it has so far paid out more than $9 billion to developers.

That’s a $1 billion increase from the total it reported it had paid out to developers as of mid-February. App Annie Index: Market Report Q1 2013 - iOS App Store revenue 2.6x that of Google Play - App Annie Blog. In a booming global app economy, United States leads iOS App Store revenue growth, while Japan and South Korea drive Google Play revenue growth Welcome to the new App Annie Market Index, where at the end of each quarter, we’ll review the latest download and revenue trends by stores, countries and categories. In addition to our monthly Games and Apps Index, the Market Index provides you with a macro view of the trends, helping you identify the most fertile investment opportunities in the app stores. Key trends across stores, countries and categories Over the past quarter, Google Play has achieved higher growth rates than the iOS App Store for both downloads and revenues.

While Google Play reached close to 90% of the iOS App Store downloads in Q1 2013, the iOS App Store maintained its strong lead in monetization, earning about 2.6x the app revenue of Google Play. In comparison, the multiple was roughly 4x for Q4 2012 overall. The Store Index iOS App Store vs. iOS App Store vs. Google Play has more downloads, but iOS still rakes in most of the profits. Sometime last fall, Apple’s iOS App Store and Google’s Play reached rough parity in the total number of apps they offer for download. But the two mobile app stores remain unequal in other ways: While Google Play accounted for a majority of worldwide mobile app downloads during the first quarter of 2013, Apple continues to rake in almost all the profits: it claimed 74 cents for every dollar spent on apps during the quarter, according to a report by Canalys published Monday. This is basically mirroring the dynamic we’ve seen play out between Android handset makers and the iPhone maker: Apple takes in a vast majority of the profits in the smartphone industry while Android device makers sell far more handsets.

Here’s the stat breakdown on Android versus iOS downloads in the Canalys App Interrogator report: Google has a bare majority of downloads, but that will likely get bigger as Android is by far the leading mobile platform by volume. Google Play Will Beat Apple App Store To 1,000,000 Apps. Apple and Google have been playing the numbers game about iOS and Android for years. Apple had the headstart, of course, but Android first caught on the number of smartphones that it ships and activates every day. Apple maintained its lead when it comes to sheer volume of apps in its App Store vs Android 's Google Play until October 2011. And it now looks like Google Play will be the first application repository to hit the million-app benchmark, months ahead of Apple. On Monday, Apple announced that it had reached 40 billion downloads and 775,000 total apps in the iOS App Store. Taken with previous data from Apple, ReadWrite extrapolated that the App Store has been growing by about 641 apps per day - or 19,230 apps per 30 days.

If we assume those rates are constant, then Apple will need 11.7 months for its developer ecosystem to push out another 225,000 apps to reach the million milestone. (Of course, if the growth rate changes, that time fram could change - in either direction.) Despite International Expansion, Amazon's Appstore Will Struggle To Compete. Most people would agree that Amazon has turned itself into a pretty amazing company. It has turned itself from an e-commerce bookseller into one of the most dynamic companies in the world, providing content for the masses, infrastructure for the Internet and a manufacturer of an array of tablets and e-readers that have helped change the way we read books.

Yet, there is one battle where Amazon has little chance of winning. The battle for App Supremacy. The Amazon Appstore for Android expanded its global footprint this week, spreading its reach to 200 countries. One might think that Amazon, considering its acumen at selling content like books, movies and music, would be a perfect fit to dominate the app space. But, if Amazon is going to climb to king of App Mountain, it has a long, hard way to go. (See also Do We Really Need Amazon TV?
