In tempo di crisi economica, capita che le biblioteche delle università si vedano costrette a disdire gli abbonamenti con le riviste scientifiche. Succede così, per esempio, che i ricercatori non possano più avere libero accesso agli studi pubblicati dei colleghi. E succede anche che qualcuno decida di ribellarsi contro le stesse riviste e gli editori, e chieda loro, se non di votarsi all' open access , quanto meno di cambiare le politiche di distribuzione e di abbassare i prezzi. Timothy Gowers , matematico all' Università di Cambridge e medaglia Fields 1998, per esempio, ha attaccato direttamente l'olandese Elsevier , uno degli editori più importanti in ambito scientifico ( Advances in Mathematics , Journal of Algebra , Journal of Geometry and Physics , Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications , per citare qualche rivista). Lo ha fatto in un recente post sul suo blog, dal titolo decisamente esplicativo: “ Elsevier - my part in its downfall ”.

Overviews of document content have been an active area of research in information visualization for many years. AutoMap is a text mining tool that enables the extraction of network data from texts. AutoMap can extract three types of information: content analytic (words and frequencies), semantic networks, and meta-networks. AutoMap uses parts of speech tagging and proximity analysis to do computer-assisted Network Text Analysis (NTA).

The authors used an accepted design paradigm to generate visualizations which improve the usability and utility of WordNet as the backbone for document content visualization.

Gephi is an open-source software for visualizing and analyzing large networks graphs. Gephi uses a 3D render engine to display graphs in real-time and speed up the exploration. A flexible and multi-task architecture brings new possibilities to work with complex data sets and produce valuable visual results. Gephi isn’t a standard graph visualization software. The Atlas of Science project proposes the creation of an information system whose major aims is to achieve a graphic representation of the IberoAmerican Science Research . Such representation is conceived as a collection of interactive maps, allowing navigation functions throughout the semantic spaces formed by the maps. SCImago is a research group from the Universities of Granada, Extremadura and Carlos III (Madrid), dedicated to information analysis, representation and retrieval by means of visualization techniques. The information used in this project has been downloaded from the ISI Web of Science® .According to its founders, “the goal of the Debategraph is to make the best arguments on all sides of any public debate freely available to all and continuously open to challenge and improvement by all.
