Niklas Elmqvist, University of Maryland, College Park The scientific community is built on peer review, where a jury of your colleagues help judge the quality of your submitted work. As the pressure to publish (or perish) grows, scientific journals and conferences in all fields are receiving an ever-increasing number of submissions to be reviewed for publication.
Considering that each scientific submission typically requires a minimum of three reviews, this in turn means that the reviewer pool must also be increased to handle the demand. Unfortunately, training new reviewers is time-consuming because writing fair, balanced, and professional reviews in a timely manner is difficult. Having people essentially learn by doing is problematic because new reviewers often make mistakes due to their lack of experience, maturity, and calibration with the rest of the field. People-Powered Data Visualization. Geoff McGhee is a journalist and data visualizer at Stanford University’s Bill Lane Center for the American West. Data Points is a new series in which we explore the world of data visualization, information graphics, and cartography. Last fall the National Audubon Society published an alarming report about the future of North American birds. Of the hundreds of species that they studied, more than half are threatened with extinction as a result of climate change.
Accompanying the report was a series of animations, produced by the San Francisco firm Stamen Design, showing how each threatened bird's home range could shift over the next 65 years. Many of the maps showed suitable habitat drifting north in response to rising temperatures and in some cases disappearing. The breeding grounds of birds such as the eastern whip-poor-will and the Baird's sparrow, a tiny grassland bird native to the northern plains, may all but vanish.

Comme bien d'autres enseignants-chercheurs, j'ai appris à exercer mon métier par essai-erreur, en tatonnant. Or, la recherche est un métier avec ses règles, avec son éthique, et un certain nombre de points de passage "obligés" ; il me semble qu'on peut aborder cette profession avec autant de professionalisme que tout autre métier. C'est un peu pour cela que depuis quelques années, j'ai monté un cours (et des exposés de durées variables) pour expliquer ces questions, permettre aux jeunes collègues (en particulier) de mieux réfléchir à ce qu'ils faisaient, à pourquoi ils le faisaient. Dans le cours proposé, voici quelques uns des éléments discutés.
