FOLLOW-UP: What exactly is a 'wormhole'? Have wormholes been proven to exist or are they still theoretical?

Holman is a professor of physics at Carnegie Mellon University. He offers this response: Wormholes are solutions to the Einstein field equations for gravity that act as "tunnels," connecting points in space-time in such a way that the trip between the points through the wormhole could take much less time than the trip through normal space. The first wormhole-like solutions were found by studying the mathematical solution for black holes. There it was found that the solution lent itself to an extension whose geometric interpretation was that of two copies of the black hole geometry connected by a "throat" (known as an Einstein-Rosen bridge). Theorists have since found other wormhole solutions; these solutions connect various types of geometry on either mouth of the wormhole.

Wormhole geometries are inherently unstable. Wormholes are great theoretical fun, and are seemingly valid solutions of the Einstein equations. William A. What is meant by topologically distinct? Astronomy Essentials. Black holes may be among the strangest – and most commonly misunderstood – objects in our universe.

The remnants of the most massive stars, they sit at the limit of our understanding of physics. They can contain several times the mass of our sun in a space no larger than a city. With gravity so intense that not even light can escape their surfaces, black holes can teach us about the absolute extremes in the cosmos and the very structure of space itself. These stars die when they can no longer fuse atomic nuclei in their core. As several octillion tons of gas come hurdling down, the star’s core undergoes a drastic change and becomes resilient to further compression. Wormholes Wormholes seem like they belong in... Time travel. Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space, generally using a theoretical invention, namely a time machine.

Time travel

It has a commonly recognized place in philosophy and fiction, but has a very limited application in real world physics, such as in quantum mechanics or wormholes. Although the 1895 novel The Time Machine by H. G. Wells was instrumental in moving the concept of time travel to the forefront of the public imagination, The Clock That Went Backward by Edward Page Mitchell was published in 1881 and involves a clock that allows a person to travel backwards in time.[1] Non-technological forms of time travel had appeared in a number of earlier stories such as Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Historically, the concept dates back to the early mythologies of Hinduism (such as the Mahabharata), Buddhism, and Islam through ancient folk tales. Teleportation in Time One of the spookiest... Video: The Science of Time Travel – Part Two. A Primer on Time, by M. Joseph Young. Temporal Anomalies in Time Travel Movies unravels Temporal Anomalies There have been several suggestions to the effect that I should post a "primer" on how time works, so that those who come to this site will have a few basic concepts and will understand what all of this says.

A Primer on Time, by M. Joseph Young

I have been reluctant to attempt to do so--and not merely because it took a full five pages in the Multiverser rules to summarize these ideas. It's also clearly the case that not all of these concepts are necessary to understand any one movie, and that the movies themselves illustrate the ideas extremely well. Time Travel Stories O.K., so I'm a sucker for a good time travel story; even a bad time travel story will hold my interest and give me something to think about. The Nature of Time This is an important point oft overlooked by many. Yet those of us with intellect and education have been taught to think of time more spatially, as a dimension.

I disagree with that view.
