The photographs surprise us with some of the most unusual behaviours of the nature. For example, when we see the Lake Rebta in Senegal, the question comes to our mind why its colour is pink. The scientific explanation is that color comes from Algae and high salt content in water. Similarly, we are surprised when we see the zigzag trail behind a big stone in the Death Valley, California. Equally impressive, is “Blood Falls” in Antarctica. Finally, one of the most strange places in the world is certainly in New Zealand. Sanzhi might look like a town out of a Star Trek episode, but it is actually an abandoned tourist destination in the north of Taiwan.

Abandoned Resort: Sanzhi, Taiwan

The concept behind Sanzhi was to build futuristic pods that would act as summer villas for the affluent who wanted retreats from the city. It was an idea that was well received and even gained financial backing from the government. Construction began in 1978, but investment capital dried up in 1980 before the project was completed. The company would go bankrupt and the property was left to rot. (Click thumbnails to enlarge) There is much speculation and legend associated with what caused the planned resort at Sanzhi to fail. This lack of funding combined with a high number of fatalities helped grow rapid speculation the land was cursed. Since all records have been destroyed, details of the fatal accidents – and even the architect of the project’s name – are things we may never know. Will this project ever be finished or the land developed?

But Wonderland, now little more than an eerie Ghost town on the outskirts of Beijing, is finally to be torn down after a catastrophic history stretching over 15 years. Construction work at the 120 acre site ground to a halt in 1998 due to a dispute between the developers and the landowners and a corruption scandal that went right to the heart of the communist party.
