Breaking the Bottle {how to} I might be on a little kick with wine bottles lately…I can’t help it, there’s just so many amazing possibilities using the corks and empty bottles!
If you enjoyed my recent post on making a Wine Cork Mat, then this next “how to” should really get your creative juices flowing! There are tons of ways to up-cycle those empty wine bottles we all aquire, but many of the projects you’ll find require the wine bottle to be cut in half…sounds scary, I know. Really this process is much easier than you may think, all you need is some string, a little nail polish remover, and a match. Of course, you will need to use caution with any project involving fire, but this one’s pretty simple. PS. How to Cut a Wine Bottle Gather Up: Cotton String Acetone Nail Polish Remover a match pot of ice cold water Fill a pot with ice cold water and set to the side Wrap a (medium thickness) piece of cotton string around the wine bottle three times (wrap it around up to 6 times for a thicker bottle), tie it. It’s a catch-all of sorts made from sheets of cardboard. I did this project in steps so it didn’t seem so daunting – it’s worth it because the end product is custom and so, so useful. Here’s how to make your own! : MATERIALS // 25 pieces of cardboard measuring 10″ x 10″, straight edge ruler, a pencil, glue, utility knife with plenty of extra blades. STEPS // 01 MEASURE YOUR TEMPLATE Using the straight edge and a pencil, measure a 1″ border on one piece of cardboard. 02 // CREATE TEMPLATE Once you have everything measured out, use a utility knife to cut out each compartment to create a template. 03 // MAKE YOUR PIECES Using your template, you’ll cut out 20 sheets of cardboard, like this: 04 // GLUE PIECES TOGETHER First, glue 5 uncut pieces of cardboard together to create a bottom. 05 // KEEP GLUING Next, take the 10 pieces that have the two cutouts and glue them right on top of the stack of cardboard.
You Say Potato...in Bags - an article from Food52. This is the eleventh in our biweekly series from Amy Pennington – urban farmer, founder of GoGo Green Garden, and author of Urban Pantry and Apartment Gardening – on how to start growing your own food, no matter how tiny your garden-to-be is. Today: Growing potatoes couldn't be easier -- as Amy explains, it's all in the bag. Literally. – Amy Growing potatoes is a pretty mysterious undertaking. All of the harvestable bits of the plant grow underground, making it hard to keep track of progress.
To grow a potato, you basically cut a small piece off of a seed potato (a potato specifically designated as seed for planting, versus a potato you buy in the store) and bury it under a few inches of soil. Potatoes in the great outdoors In small urban gardens, this task becomes difficult as we often don't have much space to begin with.
Before we get started, a few quick notes about potatoes: • Potatoes do not like super hot weather -- for Northern gardeners, now is a great time to get started. 1. 2. 3. Re-style your wireless internet router {diy} | Anamu. In order to receive wi-fi signal throughout the rest of the flat, our router must be placed in a prominent location of the living room. This diva signal initially left us with an eyesore of an ugly, blinking light box and I hated it. I did everything I could to camouflage it by setting picture frames and flower-filled vases in front of it. One day, after I had complained enough about it, Joe had the brilliant idea to cover it with a book.
Heellooo….yes, so obvious and so perfect! A few days later he came home with a vintage book he bought for 50p (cents) and got to work with his trusty blade. On a more sentimental note – are you wondering what the writing and clippings inside the book are? This book was a gift to her and in it she wrote lists of her favorite flowers, plants, trees and saved paper clippings with quotes and garden-related news. Like this post? The entryway to my little apartment is very long and skinny. I wanted to do something nice to the entry, since it's the introduction to my home... but the space is incredibly awkward for receiving guests (and there is also no way to get a good picture of it, as you will see). I decided a nice, large-ish photo gallery would be a good way to pull people's attention away from the tunnel feeling and cover a lot of space on the long wall. There are a million ways to get a frame collage onto the wall, but here is how I did mine: 1. Lay out all the frames on the ground and decide where you want to place them I wanted my grouping to have a little bit of visual movement, so it is purposely not symmetrical. 2. 3. I wanted to get an idea of exactly how my grouping would look on the wall. 4.
I used both a measuring tape and a level to make sure I had it up there correctly. 5. This was the best part about using the translucent paper. 6. Except when you do it, hang them straight. Remove Paint with a Slow Cooker and Water. SExpand Interesting... I have an army (literally, but also figuratively—about 400 or so) of little pewter figures for a game I used to play when I was in junior high and high school. I haven't played in over a decade, but the game is still popular enough and looking at the kind and quantity of figures I have, I may be able to net a couple hundred bucks on eBay. From what I can tell, the figures command a slightly higher price if they're unpainted (or if they're expertly painted, but I painted them when I was 13). If this works as well as promised, it might be time to offload them.
(NOTE: That picture is just for reference—all of my figures are in a shoebox in a closet, where they've been since we moved into our house 7 years ago.) How to Remove Rust From Old Tools. You might start by viewing your current non-rusty tools as items to protect. If you've got everything in a roll-away (or two), put some of that anti-slip expanded mesh down, so if there is condensation, at least your tools won't be sitting in puddles.
Yes, by all means, if you have them, put some silica gel packs in with your tools. Now, finally, coat your tools with something that'll protect them from moisture. WD40 is fine for this. Personally, I think LPS is a bit better, particularly for long term storage. As far as cleaning old, rusty tools, check out Kano Labs Kroil [www.kanolabs.com] to get stuck parts loose. It was from my brother-in-law, Terry, who was in a shop and saw how the proprietor had cleverly used an old rake head as a wine glass holder ~ how smart! Over the years, I've incorporated old rake heads into many different design scenarios ~ jewelry holders, art, etc. (I'll share more uses in future posts).
But honestly ~ I've never thought of them as a wine holder ~ sheer genius! I've accumulated a collection of these rusted wonders over time. I had to try this idea out for myself ~ here's what the rake looks like without its handle. I attached it to the wall using two wood screws ~ making sure to hit studs for added security. To me, it far surpasses any wine holder I've seen in retail markets ~ and I think it gets an A+ for ingenuity and creativity. Calamondin (Indoor) Orange Trees. If it smells like an orange blossom (candles, perfumes), I usually like it. I grew up in Arizona and can recall the smell of orange blossoms on command. It's one of my favorite scents - just smells like home. So how could I resist placing an order for a calamondin orange tree yesterday when I read that the best part about the trees is they blossom and produce fruit year round? I can't imagine anything better than smelling real orange blossoms in your home all the time (though fresh homemade marmalade is a close second place).
Cliff notes on caring for calamondin orange, meyer lemon, or key lime trees (which all make great, hardy indoor plants): - Plant in 1-3 gallon pots, depending on the size of your seedling.- Keep in as much direct sunlight as possible and temperatures between 65 and 90 degrees (you might want to keep the tree outdoors in the summer and in for the winter)- Fertilize in the cold months - Water only when the top inch of soil is dry.

It’s so nice to be back in New York after a whirlwind trip to Salt Lake for the (amazing) Alt Summit. I spent most of my weekend catching up on emails and was bummed that I missed this incredible submission from Stefano at TourDeFork. TourDeFork is a food design lab based in Milan that focuses on objects designed to artfully reuse food waste.
I am constantly ashamed of how much food waste AC and I produce, so these clever projects were right up my alley. TourDeFork‘s first collection (which is still in prototype form), called “Second Chance,” includes devices that help you reuse coffee grounds, apple peels and orange rinds. My personal favorite is the orange rind scent diffuser. The “Coffee Scent Dissipater” uses a porcelain base to hold your coffee grounds and a steel hanger to hang the grounds inside your fridge as a natural odor neutralizer. TourDeFork’s last piece, the “Apple Peel Grower,” aids in the production of national sour dough or yeast.
