How To Think Like An Architect: Designing From Organic Form. Mémoire bien-être. Design means doing what I say | COFFEE WITH AN ARCHITECT. Occasionally I read an article that I completely agree with. I nod my head, check an imaginary box somewhere in my cerebellum that’s labeled “see what I mean” and retweet that article. This article actually: “Great design = getting people to do what you want.”, by Seth Godin Then I go to bed. At 2:32 am, I wake up and think “wait, …. do I?”

I read Seth’s article. Great design is pushing/focusing the user to do something that he’ll thank you for later.- Seth Godin Is it my role as a designer to find a way to make the client want what I want them to want? But then the alternate seems less appealing as well. I don’t know why people hire architects and then tell them what to do.- Frank Gehry Apparently, Frank doesn’t need to be nice to get clients anymore.

I hear both sides of this argument again and again from architects. “We should provide a service to help our client navigate the process.” To be honest, I’m getting tired of the argument. The Architect's Academy. The Architecture & Design Daily. Intelligence and the Neurosciences Part 2. Intelligence and the Neurosciences: Second Installment In the first installment of these two blogs on Intelligence and the Neurosciences I recounted some of the important progress that has been made establishing the genetic, neurophysiological, and neuroanatomical underpinning of individual differences in cognition , i.e. of intelligence.

The findings are steps toward establishing a theory of the biological basis of intelligence. In this blog I am going to turn the argument around, and argue that for many aspects of psychology a purely biological approach is not all that useful. In the end all of psychology reduces to biology. The Purpose of Theory First an anecdote. “Ron, what are the goals of Physics?” The physicist answered “To understand the nature of the universe.” The VP asked the Chair if he wanted to be more specific. The Chair was taking the classic reductionist view of science. While reductionism is one of the goals of theory building, there is another. Brunswikian Symmetry. Domus. Questions for your Architect. Ophiuchus: The Serpent Bearer (Playing With Numbers) Whether it is because I have OCD or because I was raised Catholic and am fascinated with numbers, take for example the number 13 which is the number of letters I have in my name: FRANK CUNHA III (without the spaces); Some say that the concept of Friday 13 being an unlucky day is linked with events that occurred in the Christian Bible, and they interpret that these events occurred on a Friday.

Examples include the great flood during the time of Noah, the confusion of languages at the Tower of Babel, the day Eve tempted Adam with the apple, and the day Jesus Christ died. But I digress, the point of this post is to memorialize my ability to finally record (albeit partially) the shadow of Ophiuchus cast onto the concrete pad at a popular sculpture located at Montclair State University. I first heard about the sculpture from a studio professor at NJIT (Don Wall, friend to John Hedjuk ). Like this: Like Loading... Minaret of Jam – The Lost Architecture | Container Architecture. The Illuminati exposed: Why the Libor conspiracy scandal is the most important story in the world. The Illuminati exposed: Why the Libor conspiracy scandal is the most important story in the world American banks are about to be engulfed by the biggest scandal in financial history. Or maybe not, it will largely depend on how closely the public pays attention.

If they are paying attention, the game, as it is currently being played, is finished. The Libor scandal reveals capitalism’s vaunted Free Market is a con trick, which has been fraudulently controlled by international banks for their own and select cartels and speculators’ interest. The cost of this fraudulent activity has been paid for by the public - the savers, mortgage owners and pensioners. There is now proof positive that the financial elite have been playing us all for fools. The bankers at the tip top of the food chain (literally) have been caught red-handed with their collective hands in our collective cookie jars, to put it another way.

‘Dude. While the bankers bashed the Bolly, the public picked up the tab. Albert Einstein quote- The most evident difference springs from the important part which is. Aesthetics/Anesthetics. Storefront for Art and Architecture was founded in 1982 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of architecture and the built environment.

Ten years after its opening, artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl were commissioned to rethink and redesign the façade of Storefront's narrow, wedge-shaped exhibition space. Their solution, a façade with 12 puzzle-like rotating panels, gave the organization a striking new identity and the Kenmare St. gallery quickly became a New York City architectural landmark. It has now been twenty years since Holl and Acconci's porous façade first dissolved the boundary between street and gallery, and Storefront has once again commissioned artists and architects to rethink their space. Though the gallery itself is the subject of the exhibition, the content of the drawings address a larger question about architectural representation: "What is it that an architectural drawing does and how does it do it?

Posted on April 04th, 2012 in Furniture Design Missix is a small armchair made of rotational molded polythene and featuring a fully modern and clean design. And yet its soul looks back at the mysterious Minoan spirals from Santorini. Missix’s name comes from its unique heavy-rounded, number six shape. This small armchair looks compact and monolithic together, yet its sinuous and enveloping line shows its minimal nature, enhanced by a light and soft shape.

The chair is made of rotational moulded polythene. The intuition behind Missix comes from the mysterious perfection of the Minoan spirals from Santorini, which date a thousand years earlier than the geometrical figure commonly attributed to Archimedes. via. You’ve probably heard by now that sitting at your desk is killing you. No? Allow me to elaborate. The average person spends a third of their life sitting down, which lowers blood sugar, decreases blood flow, and puts you at risk for diabetes and heart disease. Some doctors even call our culturally ingrained inactivity “Sitting Disease,” which seems a little dramatic, but there’s truth in it. Spurred by growing evidence of the risks of sitting on your butt all day, standing workstations are an increasingly popular alternative. Martin Keen, founder of hybrid footwear brand , started working at a standing desk years ago. He unveiled his upright workstation at ICFF earlier this month. Granted, the Focal isn’t a great looking object, and we do wish Keen had hired an outside designer.

The Law of Success Vol I Disc 01. The Law of Success Vol I Disc 01. The Law of Success Vol I Disc 01. Rich Dad, Poor Dad CD3of3. Watch: A Drawing Machine That Only Draws Other Drawing Machines. A modern CNC machine programmed to illustrate historical drawing machines?

The concept alone seems custom-made to intrigue and delight meta-loving Internet denizens, but MachineDrawing DrawingMachines isn’t some fly-by-night experimentation; Pablo Garcia, the man behind the project, has been researching drawing machines for years. “My interest has always been in how the machines actually work, and how a contemporary user would have seen the world differently through a mechanical aid to drawing,” he tells Co.Design. His current collection of over 150 artifacts includes “reproductions of drawing treatises, scientific equipment catalogs, patents, and other places inventors described their improvements to drawing,” while the 12 illustrated for this particular project “connect the dots from the Renaissance to today with a representative from every generation up until the mid-twentieth century.”

By this time most of you have already seen the cool picture to the right depicting the upcoming Planetary Alignment over Giza on December 3, 2012. Although a very cool picture indeed, it’s not realistic. There will be a planetary alignment on December 3, 2012 over Giza but it will not look quite as impressive as it does here.

I decided to grab an image of the Giza Complex this morning and crop it out with GIMP. You’ll notice that in my image the planets are indeed aligned but not in the awesome way of the hoax picture to the right. What you may also find interesting in my picture below is that the star Spica, shining at magnitude .95, is also part of this chain of wonders. Like this: Am. I think I like my new office. I think I like my new office. At the beginning of this year I had a minor meltdown. By the end of 2011, work was slow, which is nothing new really, but, it was slow enough to make me reconsider what I’m doing.

I stopped really caring about architecture for a while. I just pushed through the jobs I had “on the boards”, and kept my head down. When I get like this, I tend to set goals and milestones for myself. Actually, I should clarify that a bit. So, I changed a few things. I started to completely ignore architecture. Now it’s 3 months later, and, I’m sitting out on my porch-office, with the windows open, listening to a gentle spring rain. Instructions for Designers. AEC Daily. The Winds, They Are A-Changing: Architecture + Weather | Environment. Skygrove, image via HWKN It has been a trying week or two here in New York City, to say the least! A good portion of the East Coast is still suffering the effects of Sandy, with many people still without power and stranded in their homes.

Even Architizer has been forced to temporarily relocate to Brooklyn because our Midtown office is still inaccessible. With all the talk about super storms and changing weather patterns that have been dominating headlines, we can’t help but think about the future of Architecture + Weather. We’ve already spent the past week speculating on the topic, with posts about buildings that have survived natural disasters and futuristic designs that have the potential to save us from these impending storms. Now, it’s time for us to dig a little deeper into how exactly the weather shapes architecture. We’ve selected projects that were designed as specific responses to natural crises brought on by a variety of atmospheric events.

Online map services like Google Earth and Streetview have revolutionised the way architects collect information on development sites. But they are just the tip of the iceberg. This article looks at how internet giants like Google and Bing have created the ‘virtual site visit’, while smaller, niche services provide other vital information, like flood risk zones, post codes and relevant planning policies. The virtual site visit – aerial photography Thanks to aerial photography, architects can learn a lot about a development site at a moment's notice. Google Maps is most architects’ first choice for a quick aerial view, but worthy competitors include Bing Maps, Nokia Maps and Yell. Streetviews Google’s Streetview, below, literally adds another dimension to aerial photography by allowing architects to see roads at near eye-level and view buildings from a variety of angles.

Day 4 - Louis Kahn's Stairs. For day four of architecture week, I take a look at the stairs of Louis Kahn. Specifically, the stair within the Yale University Art Gallery and the Center for British Arts in New Haven, CT. These buildings are just across the street from each other in New Haven. This is one of Louis Kahn’s first buildings and one of his last, right across from each other. In the mid 1990s, I lived in New Haven for 8 months while my wife had an internship at Yale. And, my office was just around the corner from these two museums. Enjoy: Photo credits: The stair plans were drawn by me. The SUD-Salon Urbain de Douala does what many critics claim the leading biennials and triennials fail to do — make an impact. The world may well find it hard to believe that Africa can produce anything hugely innovative, contemporary and truly international but SUD has transformed Douala. I don't really know where to start but we can play this like a Gamebook. If you know what a biennial is, go to 2. If you know what a biennial is and you also know where Douala is, go directly to 3. If you know what a biennial is but did not think there were any in Africa, you'd better start from 1. 1. The place-name in the title is another distinctive feature as, one way or another, it is a declaration of a wish to promote tourism.
