Wspólnym mianem pasożytniczych świerzbowców, które za gospodarzy upodobały sobie wiele gatunków ssaków, w tym psa, określamy różne gatunki mikroskopijnych rozmiarów pajęczaków (Arachnida) z rzędu roztoczy (Acari) przynależących do rodziny świerzbowcowatych (Sarcoptidae) i rodzaju świerzbowców drążących (Sarcoptes) oraz przynależących do rodziny świerzbowców naskórnych (Psoroptidae) i rodzaju Otodectes. Pierwsze udokumentowane wzmianki na temat "swędzącej" choroby skóry wywoływanej przez świerzbowce u ludzi pojawiły się w opublikowanym w 1687 roku liście włoskiego lekarza Giovanni Cosimo Bonomo "Observations concerning the fleshworms of the human body”. W uprzednio prowadzonych badaniach wespół z włoskim przyrodnikiem Diacinto (znanym również jako Giacinto) Cestonim i włoskim lekarzem, przyrodnikiem oraz pisarzem Francesco Redim, Giovanni Cosimo Bono wykazał, iż za przypadłość tą odpowiadają właśnie świerzbowce.
