Air India Express plane skids off hilltop runway, cracks, killing 18. Teams conduct search and rescue operation at the site after an Air India Express passenger plane with 191 passengers onboard skidded off the runway in the southern Indian state of Kerala on August 07, 2020.
Anadolu Agency | Getty Images The plane swayed violently as it approached a hilltop runway drenched in monsoon rain, and moments later the special return flight for Indians stranded abroad by the pandemic skidded off, nosedived and cracked in two, leaving 18 dead and more than 120 injured. Among the injured on Friday night, at least 15 were in critical condition, said Abdul Karim, a senior police officer in southern Kerala state. The dead included both pilots of the Air India Express flight, the airline said in a statement, adding that the four cabin crew were safe. The 2-year-old Boeing 737-800 flew from Dubai to Kozhikode, also called Calicut, in Kerala. He said he followed other passengers who crawled their way out of the fuselage through the emergency door. Stringer | REUTERS. Stock market today: Dow and S&P 500 eke out their sixth straight gains as investors await stimulus deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 eked out small gains on Friday, shaking off concerns over rising U.S.
-China tensions and ongoing coronavirus stimulus negotiations. The 30-stock Dow closed 46.50 points higher, or 0.2%, at 27,433.48. The S&P 500 ended the session up 0.1% at 3,351.28. Those gains were enough to stretch their winning streaks to six days. The Nasdaq Composite lagged, falling 0.9% to 11,010.98 and snapping a seven-session winning streak. President Donald Trump on Thursday night issued executive orders to address “the threat posed” by Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat.
It comes as tensions between Washington and Beijing continue to escalate over several issues including the origins of the coronavirus and democracy in Hong Kong. Stimulus talks fall apart Meanwhile, talks between the White House and Democratic leaders fell apart as the two sides can reach a deal on a new coronavirus stimulus package. U.S. jobs report easily tops expectations. Canada to impose tariffs on $2.7 billion in U.S. goods after Trump reignites trade feud.
Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland attends a news conference as efforts continue to help slow the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada March 23, 2020.
Blair Gable | Reuters Canada said Friday it will slap retaliatory tariffs on $2.7 billion worth of U.S. goods, the latest development in a new trade feud sparked by President Donald Trump’s decision to reimpose aluminum duties on the U.S. ally. “Canada will respond swiftly and strongly,” Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said at a news conference. Coronavirus: These restaurant chains cut menu items during the pandemic. When the coronavirus pandemic forced restaurants to shut their dining rooms, many chains slimmed down their menus to make service smoother — and some of those changes may be permanent.
States and cities across the country are easing restrictions, but menus are unlikely to snap back to their pre-pandemic status. Bloated menus can overwhelm customers, slow down the kitchen and lead to longer drive-thru lines. The crisis gives restaurant chains an opportunity to reevaluate what they’re serving and to focus on driving sales. McDonald’s, for example, used the pandemic as a chance to accelerate its plans to trim its U.S. menu. The Chicago-based company analyzed more than 100 items to decide what changes to make. Officials long warned of explosive chemicals at Beirut port. At least 10 times over the past six years, authorities from Lebanon’s customs, military, security agencies and judiciary raised alarm that a massive stockpile of explosive chemicals was being kept with almost no safeguard at the port in the heart of Beirut, newly surfaced documents show.
Yet in a circle of negligence, nothing was done — and on Tuesday, the 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate blew up, obliterating the city’s main commercial hub and spreading death and wreckage for miles around. President Michel Aoun, in office since 2016, said Friday that he was first told of the dangerous stockpile nearly three weeks ago and immediately ordered military and security agencies to do “what was needed.”
But he suggested his responsibility ended there, saying he had no authority over the port and that previous governments had been told of its presence. “Do you know how many problems have been accumulating?” Markets could be challenged by Washington stimulus talks and China tensions. Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images The debate in Washington over the next round of fiscal stimulus and rising tensions between the White House and China could act as brakes on the stock market in the coming week. Stocks rallied in the past week but were more sluggish Friday, as investors watched stimulus talks between Democrats and the Trump administration stall out. Investors also were concerned that President Donald Trump’s executive order banning U.S. transactions with Tencent’s We Chat and Bytedance’s Tik Tok would accelerate the deterioration of relations between the U.S. and China and draw retribution.
Just ahead of Friday’s market close, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said just that he is recommending the White House move forward with executive orders on unemployment, student loans and rental foreclosures. Mauritius declares emergency as stranded ship spills fuel. Bystanders look at MV Wakashio bulk carrier that had run aground and from which oil is leaking near Blue Bay Marine Park in south-east Mauritius on August 6, 2020.
Dev Ramkhelawon | AFP | Getty Images The Indian Ocean island of Mauritius declared a “state of environmental emergency” late Friday after a Japanese-owned ship that ran aground offshore days ago began spilling tons of fuel. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced the development as satellite images showed a dark slick spreading in the turquoise waters near environmental areas that the government called “very sensitive.”
Mauritius has said the ship was carrying nearly 4,000 tons of fuel and cracks have appeared in its hull. Jugnauth earlier in the day said his government was appealing to France for help, saying the spill “represents a danger” for the country of some 1.3 million people that relies heavily on tourism and has been been hit hard by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Coronavirus stimulus updates: Relief bill stalls, Trump mulls executive order. After coronavirus aid talks between Democratic leaders and the Trump administration ground to a halt Friday, President Donald Trump threatened to take executive action if the sides fail to reach a deal.
Negotiators emerged from a 90-minute meeting in the Capitol on Friday appearing to have made minimal progress toward bridging a gulf over spending to combat a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic. Both Democrats and White House officials pointed to fundamental disagreements over how to address the crisis, making it unclear when they could agree on legislation that could pass both chambers of Congress. Speaking to a ballroom packed with members of his New Jersey country club on Friday evening, Trump said he would “act under [his] authority as president to get Americans the relief they need” if Congress fails to strike an agreement with his administration. Because Congress controls federal spending, it is unclear what power Trump has to extend those programs. Trump TikTok, WeChat ban echoes other countries, including China. Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook Source: Reuters; Apple President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday ordering U.S. firms to stop doing business with popular Chinese apps TikTok, owned by ByteDance, and WeChat, owned by Tencent.
This comes after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier in the week that he was calling on American app stores — which are dominated by Apple and Google — to remove “untrusted” Chinese apps. “With parent companies based in China, apps like TikTok, WeChat, and others, are significant threats to personal data of American citizens, not to mention tools for CCP content and censorship,” Pompeo said in a briefing with reporters on Wednesday. It’s unclear how the companies plan to implement the Trump administration’s executive order, which becomes effective on Sept. 20, or the State Department program. Buffett buys back record $5.1 billion in Berkshire stock as coronavirus hits operating earnings.
Warren Buffett Gerard Miller | CNBC Berkshire Hathaway announced on Saturday it bought back a record amount of its own stock during the second quarter as the coronavirus pandemic dented operations for Warren Buffett’s conglomerate. The company said it repurchased $5.1 billion worth in stock in May and June. Berkshire repurchased more than $4.6 billion of its Class B stock and about $486.6 million in Class A shares. The share repurchase is the most ever in a single period for Buffett, nearly double the $2.2 billion the conglomerate bought back in the final quarter of 2019. City in China's Inner Mongolia issues warning after bubonic plague patient dies. Authorities in a city in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia issued a warning after a patient who had bubonic plague died of multiple organ failure, state media reported on Saturday.
Cases of plague are not uncommon in China, although outbreaks have become increasingly rare. From 2009 to 2018, China reported 26 cases and 11 deaths. The patient was confirmed to have bubonic plague, the People’s Daily reported, citing an announcement from the health committee of the Bayan Nur city. The bubonic plague, known as the “Black Death” in the Middle Ages, is a highly infectious and often fatal disease that is spread mostly by rodents. The committee issued a third-level alert, the second lowest in a four-level system, effective Friday to the end of 2020 to prevent the spread of the disease, the People’s Daily reported.

U.S. intel: Russia trying to hurt Biden, but China, Iran don't want Trump. Russia is trying to “undermine” presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s candidacy, while China and Iran are against President Donald Trump’s reelection, a leading U.S. intelligence official said Friday.
The analysis of the three U.S. adversaries’ alleged interference efforts came in a statement from William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center, who said he released the information to help Americans “play a critical role in safeguarding our election.” While many foreign actors have views on who should hold the White House, “We are primarily concerned about the ongoing and potential activity by China, Russia, and Iran,” Evanina said.
