It isn’t often that an animation leaves me dumbstruck, but this one did the trick. Descendants is an extraordinary 14 minute animated short about the wish of attaining the unattainable and that out of every great evil some great good must come. The protagonists are a pair of flowers (the older more experienced voiced by Whoopi Goldberg in full form and the younger by Christy Scott Cashman). They grow on the edge of a clearing next to one another. One wonders from the start whether there is some symbiotic connection between them.

One is aged and world-weary, made bitter by an unexplained backstory - the other one still youthful, vibrant and inquisitive. Providence has joined these two almost as one and it seems this is how it could continue, until one day a company comes to the clearing conveying something unanticipated to their lives. Animated drawings - Focus on Animation - ONF. By Marcel Jean Animation Expert Animated drawings were originally done on paper. Pioneers such as Émile Cohl of France (Fantasmagorie, 1908) and Winsor McCay (Gertie the Dinosaur, 1914) of the United States worked with this medium, but there were problems inherent in paper's opacity.

First, the artist couldn't keep the static parts of the drawing and change only the ones that moved. Second, there were problems with image stability and unavoidable jitter. The experiments done in New York in the early 1900s by Quebecer Raoul Barré paved the way for cel animation. But just what exactly is it? All the productions of the big American studios (Disney, Warner, MGM, Hanna-Barbera) were essentially based on this technique, which was later modified (use of three-dimensional sets by the Fleischer brothers, use of multiplane camera, etc.). In 1990 Walt Disney Pictures stopped using cel animation. Although many animators were working on cels, others continued to draw on paper.
