Vision simulation is one way to understand how the world is experienced by someone with a visual impairment. This section has links to photographs, activities, and instructions for creating your own vision simulators.

Below is a list of topics you'll find in this section. Several people have requested copies of the article I wrote for our July 1990 DC-Maryland AER newsletter, so I am reprinting it in this issue with some updates on prices and sources, and also Defining our termsI have repeatedly found that visual simulators are worth more than a thousand words of explanation about visual impairments, and for less than $10 a pair, you can make your own vision simulators.

Before I explain how to make them, I'd like to share with you some definitions of terms that I will use, courtesy of Dr. Duane Geruschat, Coordinator of Research at The Maryland School for the Blind. He says that... "a scotoma is defined as an area of decreased perception surrounded by an area more sensitive to the same stimulus (Anderson 1987). "There is also a concept known as a depression, which is defined as an area of decreased sensitivity.

"The zone of uncertainty is the effect seen when you change testing conditions. The citations for Duane's information are: Su, Y.D. (1984). Vision Simulation. Vision Simulation Presentation. Approximately one in twenty people have some form of colour blindess that prevents them from seeing colour the same way that people without any colour vision deficiencies do. Many images and resources on the web are coloured in such a way that it's difficult for users with vision deficiencies to comprehend them. We've seen many examples in our time, including theatre seating plans where colour blind users couldn't differentiate one section of seating from another!

There are a number of colour blindness conditions, including the three simulated by our tool. Use our Colour Blindness Simulator to reveal how your images may appear to users with a variety of colour blindness conditions. Upload a JPEG image of no more than 1000 pixels x 1000 pixels (100 KB filesize or less) to see how colour blind users may see it. Want to upload a larger image or see how a website looks? This is a new tool and therefore remains a work in progress.
