Flex. An Easier Way to Send Large Email Attachments | Walter S. Mossberg and Katherine Boehret | The Mossberg Solution | AllThingsD. How many times have you wanted to email a large attachment — like a bunch of digital photos, an album of songs, or a hefty video — but didn’t do so because it exceeded your email provider’s, or the recipient’s, limits on attachment size, or because it might max out the recipient’s mailbox? This frustration is growing increasingly common as better digital cameras produce bigger photos and large video clips, and digital music becomes more widespread. Computer hard disks have grown nicely to accommodate these files, but limits on the size of email messages haven’t. And, even if you could send such large attachments, it can take forever to send them via email, partly because broadband upload speeds lag far behind download speeds. Instead of suffering the frustration of a bounced email, many folks have resorted to Web-based services like Shutterfly or Kodak EasyShare Gallery or YouTube.com or Google Video for sharing digital photos and videos.

Here’s how you use Pando. UC-San Diego computer scientists release most realistic online makeover tool on the Web. Public release date: 19-Mar-2008 [ Print | E-mail Share ] [ Close Window ] Contact: Daniel Kanedbkane@ucsd.edu 858-534-3262University of California - San Diego UC San Diego computer scientists have released their online makeover tool to the public this week at taaz.com. The cosmetics counter is no longer the only place to try out the latest makeup trends. The new way is easier, faster, and much more private. Anyone with a digital photograph can now apply more than 4,000 makeup products with the click of a mouse. It’s all at www.taaz.com - the creation of two Jacobs School of Engineering computer scientists turned entrepreneurs. You can watch a video demonstration of the online makeover tool at: The computer scientists invented an algorithm for separating gloss from non-gloss in digital images -- a technical feat crucial for taaz.com’s patented approach to applying photorealistic makeup to images.

Netgear's Digital Entertainer is a feature-packed product, but setting it up entails visiting too many menus. Fortunately, the menu screens are eye-pleasing and easy to read. Also, the remote feels right in the hand, and it has large, well-placed buttons. The EVA8000 scans your PC or PCs and organizes your media, making the video or song that you seek easier to find, even if you don't use the supplied server software.

The device played almost every file I threw at it: DivX, Xvid, and .mp4 (MPEG-4 video with .aac audio). It was one of only three players that could play protected .wma files, and it and the Apple TV were the only two units that could play copy-protected iTunes Music Store files. The Digital Entertainer has impressive Internet streaming capabilities. Not surprisingly, YouTube videos look like bad surrealism on a 50-inch HDTV. On the flip side, the Digital Entertainer handles video shot at a good resolution quite well. The EVA8000 has some unique extras, too. Lincoln Spector. Apple Gives Developers Safari 4 Preview | World of Apple. Apple has given developers a preview copy of Safari 4 via the Apple Developer Connection website. Safari 4 Developer preview is available for Mac OS X Leopard, Tiger and Microsoft Windows. Safari 4 currently has very few new features but is significantly quicker compared to Safari 3.1 and scores 100/100 in the Acid3 test.

Safari 4 adds the ability to Save a webpage as an application, similar functionality to the third-party application Fluid. Also spotted in the Safari preferences is the ability to specify whether new tabs or windows open with; home page, same page, empty page or bookmarks. Cool Software App #3 More than once in consulting work, I've needed a tool to quickly mockup user interfaces to help client envision the screen interactions, data structures, and/or overall look-and-feel of a proposed system that I'm helping define requirements for.

As I've seen it, the solutions to do that are basically limited to: 1) Photoshop (Fireworks, GIMP, etc) 2) Actually creating the screen in an IDE like Delphi, VB, or whatever, or 3) Visio, using the shapes intended for UI design. Photoshop works, but in my opinion it's generally a pretty inefficient method for creating what begs to be created w/predefined drag-and-drop shapes. Using the IDE directly seems to invariably cause issues when mocking up actual data, needing to be able to compile to get the actual screencap, and is usually too cumbersome as well, in my experience. At any rate, I like it, and look forward to seeing where the author takes it in terms of development.
