Augmented Reality, or AR, is “layering digital information onto the physical world,” in the words of New York Times Creative Technologist Michael Young. The most common AR apps today live on “smart” handheld devices like the iPhone or ones using Google’s Android platform. How augmented reality apps can catch on. Stella Artois, the Belgian beer with the fancy name, made a splash about a year ago with its Le Bar Guide app.

How augmented reality apps can catch on

The app’s hook is an augmented reality (AR) view that shows local bars and restaurants that serve the beer. Here’s a video of the app in action. When it launched, I thought the Stella app was a clever marketing tool that was a bit ahead of the AR curve. Yet, that positive first impression was fleeting. I didn’t think of the app again until it came up during a recent interview with Lynne d Johnson (@lynneluvah), senior vice president at the Advertising Research Foundation, at last month’s Web 2.0 Expo NY.

Course Assignment – Major Project at Text spaces in Augmented Reality (AR) Oren Lupo ETEC 540b Dec 1, 2010 Augmented Reality (AR) is a field of computing and visual simulation that blends real-world environments with virtual, computer-generated elements such as text data, visual reference points, animations and 3D graphics.

Whereas virtual reality replaces the real world with a purely virtual one (e.g. Second Life), AR brings the two together, creating an immersive experience that is perceived by our brains as an enhanced or supplemented view of the world. (O’Shea, 2009) The virtual elements in AR technologies are connected or mapped onto real locations in three-dimensional space. A typical AR system set up would include a webcam, computer or mobile device such as a smartphone, and software that detects the position of one or more visual markers in the webcam’s view of the environment.

Last academic year, the Skidmore GIS Center began to experiment with augmented reality and mobile devices in order to investigate how these technologies could be applied on campus and in the classroom. This last month the project has successfully passed through the alpha stage, and the GIS Center has published the Skidmore Campus Map using Layar. Layar is an augmented reality platform which allows for a large amount of AR content created by multiple individuals to be served within one application. Using Layar’s API, we were able to add Points of Interest (POIs) around the Skidmore Campus which would then be served to a user by through the Layar application for iPhone or Android devices. Here’s what the layer looks like: This layer was created by pulling the content from Skidmore’s online campus tour, using Google Maps to obtain coordinates, and entering this information into PorPOIse, a PHP Layar server.

Using your iPhone 3GS or Android camera you can walk around Sydney and discover how it looked in the past. Simply download the free Layar application to your device and head for downtown Sydney. What do I need? You’ll need either an iPhone 3GS or an Android phone. It is not compatible with the iPod Touch or earlier versions of the iPhone because they lack a compass. AR Games. The MIT Teacher Education Program, in conjunction with The Education Arcade, has been working on creating "Augmented Reality" simulations to engage people in simulation games that combine real world experiences with additional information supplied to them by handheld computers.

AR Games

The first of these games, Environmental Detectives (ED), is an outdoor game in which players using GPS guided handheld computers try to uncover the source of a toxic spill by interviewing virtual characters and conducting large scale simulated environmental measurements and analyzing data. This game has been run at three sites, including MIT, a nearby nature center, and a local high school. Early research has shown that this mode of learning is successful in engaging university and secondary school students in large scale environmental engineering studies, and providing an authentic mode of scientific investigation. » Augmented Reality, Blogs and Geo-Tagging to Connect Students with their Environment Abroad Educational Tech Ideas. During morning classes, students will be learning about history, literature, art and architecture, and then apply the coursework by taking field trips to see the actual sites. Assignment Contemporary College Life Presentation using Augmented Reality: This group project will include getting to know some Nanzan students and finding out about their lives. You will introduce the students and some interesting things you discovered about how their college life is similar to or different from your own. As part of this, you will introduce the class to an important place in their lives outside the college proper, be it karaoke bar, club or park.
