McLaren’s Workshop is a free iPad app from the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) that provides access to over fifty films by experimental filmmaker Norman McLaren and allows users to create their own films with animation techniques used by McLaren. I was impressed when I previewed the app last fall at the NFB’s Montreal headquarters, and now that I’ve had a chance to play with it more extensively, I can confirm that it’s a no-brainer download for anyone with even the slightest interest in animation. The fifty-one shorts on the app include all of McLaren’s best known works such as Begone Dull Care, Blinkity Blank, Le Merle, Neighbours and Pas de Deux as well as plenty of rarities dating back to the early-1930s.

It makes me think back to the 1990s, when I saw my first McLaren film on an ancient stretched-out videotape, and I can only marvel at how easy this app makes it to view such a varied assortment of his work. . As the old expression “a canary in a coal mine” suggests, the small songbirds have long been a symbol of a type of early-detection system — a way of indicating something that might otherwise remain unknown.

And just as the old coal mine canaries alerted miners to invisible gases and fumes, the camera is capable of capturing moments that might pass unrevealed, or undiscovered. The striking pictures in Japanese artist Lieko Shiga’s series, Canary — currently on display at the Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam FOAM — references this powerful metaphor with images that are not immediately recognizable, nor easily understood, but that are nevertheless laden with meaning. The Amsterdam show is comprised of an extensive body of work first published as a book in 2007 — a book that has since become something of a classic among photobook collectors. Shiga’s work is strongly reminiscent of the black and white photography of Masatoshi Naito.

One topic that I have been asked repeatedly to write about, is how we made the animations for Awesomenauts. This is indeed a big and interesting topic, so today, I would like to discuss that in more detail! I have previously shown how we make characters aim in all directions and shoot in all directions, but that did not explain the workflow and tools that our artists use to actually make those animations and put them in the game. Today's post will! The core animation work for Awesomenauts is done in After Effects. This may come as a surprise to people who don't know the tool, since After Effects is mostly known as a video editing tool, but it is actually a great general animation tool.

It is also a big step up in comparison to Swords & Soldiers, which was animated in Flash. Another reason not to use Flash is that Flash is a rather basic animation tool. After Effects is only one part of our total animation workflow, though. A particularly important choice here is how to make animations. Super Mario Bros 3 Camera Dead Zone. Game Feel. Cartoon Kevin. The Parallax Scrolling Effect: 40 Examples and Tutorials. In this round up, we have some fantastic examples and uses of the parallax effect for you. The parallax scrolling effect, now a firm design trend, is a technique that uses multiple background images that move at different, yet synchronized, speeds as the user scrolls down (also, less popularly, horizontally) a web page. The overall effect gives the viewer a seamless and intriguing browsing experience that just looks damn good!

At the bootom of the page we have also included a selection of tutorials to help get yopu started. The Whispered World. The Whispered World is a traditional-style point-and-click adventure game for Microsoft Windows.

It is designed by Marco Hüllen, developed by Daedalic Entertainment, and published by Deep Silver[1] in Europe and by Viva Media[2] in the United States. The four-act game takes place in a fantasy world and features a sad 12 year-old clown as its hero. The graphics are 2D and are all hand-drawn and animated. As of September 2010, the game has a cumulative score of 70/100 and 71% on Metacritic and GameRankings respectively. Plot[edit] Screenshot The game takes place in Silentia, a dream fantasy world of a young, sad circus-clown named Sadwick. Sadwick wanders off to a nearby forest and meets Bobby, a Chaski, messenger of the King. Shana directs Sadwick to a nearby island to find mysterious Kalida who eventually takes him near Corona. Upon repairing the mechanism, a blue sphere from Sadwick's nightmares appears saying that Sadwick is inevitably ending the world.

By Jacob Seidelin Note that there is a Czech translation of this article available - Jak vytvořit pseudo 3D hry v HTML5 canvasu s raycastingem - translated by Martin Hassman.

Introduction With the increase in browser performance in recent times it has become easier to implement games in JavaScript beyond simple games like Tic-Tac-Toe. We no longer need to use Flash to do cool effects and, with the advent of the HTML5 Canvas element, creating snazzy looking web games and dynamic graphics is easier than ever before.

One game, or game engine, I wanted to implement for some time was a psuedo-3D engine such as the one used in the old Wolfenstein 3D game by iD Software. In this article, I'll deconstruct the latter project and go through the details of how to create your own pseudo-3D raycasting engine. The article assumes a decent level of experience with JavaScript, familiarity with the HTML5 canvas element and at least a basic understanding of trigonometry. Nowadays, you can see a lot of websites that break the traditional notions of user navigation experience. One of these new breeds of websites are those that make use of parallax scrolling effects in their backgrounds.

Parallax scrolling, the technique employed to create an animated illusion of depth has been quite popular in games and now it has found its way in making website interfaces more interesting and enjoyable. Thanks to talented web designers and developers who are constantly searching for ways to enhance web technologies, notably the creation of responsive mechanisms in web designs, and in the given case, parallax effects. If you want a site like this and have a tight budget I can tell you that some single page templates for WordPress and dedicated parallax website templates have what it takes.

This section explores game design from a gameplay perspective, in the sense of games as systems of rules. Gameplay also has aesthetic qualities if we conceptualize games as shapes.

Key to this conceptual view is the understanding that games are vehicles for activating stories. Even traditional games like chess give players a purpose to act upon, and construct their personal narrative within the play area. Today's video games are capable of activating stories with infinitely more complex narrative structures, on account of the medium's dynamic and interactive properties. We've seen through the above example of dynamic composition that classical art, and video game art is linked by a common visual grammar.

We must only consider how interactivity affects traditional design principles to reveal these links. The above illustration features three games -- piñata, hide and seek, and baseball. Jan Roeland, Studio, Amsterdam, 2007 Jan Roeland, born in 1935 (NL), has built up an oeuvre of paintings which moves between geometric abstraction and figuration. Recognisable simple motifs of everyday objects, such as hammers, toy-aeroplanes, plants and ducks give his formally built up abstract painting some sense of humor. His paintings are precisely constructed and built up with several layers of oil paint, in which color plays an important role. The relatively small formats of his canvases fit in the old Dutch tradition of Easel-painting. Roeland lives and works in Amsterdam.

Indie Game: The Movie - The Final Push by BlinkWorks. Indie Game: The Movie is a feature documentary about video games, their creators and the craft.

The film follows the dramatic journeys of indie game developers as they create their games, and as they release those works, and themselves, to the world. Indie Game: The Movie is about making video games, but at its core, it’s about the creative process and exposing yourself through your work. The film tells the emotional story of a two-man team, Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes, as they craft and release their first major game for XBOX, "Super Meat Boy". It follows Phil Fish, the creator of the highly- anticipated game, "Fez", as he shows it for the first time in 4 years at the giant gaming expo, PAX EAST. And, the film tells behind-the-scenes story an independent designer, Jonathan Blow, who made one of highest-rated video games of all-time, "Braid".

Four developers, three games, and one ultimate goal - to express one’s self through a video game. 16 Infographic Resumes, A Visual Trend. (It’s actually up to 18 now.) A number of designers have attempted to design a visual, infographic resume, and while this is certainly not mainstream (yet), it is gaining some momentum. I wanted to highlight some of the great examples available on the web, but the line between an infographic resume and a designer resume is tough not to cross. I’ve tried to stay true to only infographic versions here, and didn’t include many good illustrated resumes that didn’t include any visualizations. Michael Anderson’s 2008 concept on an infographic resume (above) is probably the most well known.

It’s been tweeted, dugg, reddit-ed and featured on FastCompany.com. I decided to update my résumé with a different perspective on the typical time-line theme. I do agree it’s more of an overview and less of a project-experience-oriented resume, but I’ve been thinking a lot about (and looking at) resumes lately, and I feel like what you really need to do is grasp someone’s attention first.
