Theism, Atheism and Non-Theism in Buddhism. Belief And Faith. Dear seekers, dear sisters and brothers, with your soul’s permission, I wish to say a few words before I give my talk.
At the beginning of this year, it was the fervent wish of myself and my students to be of dedicated, soulful service to seekers all over the country. In each state we decided to give a talk and offer our dedicated service. Today marks the end of this series. Today, I shall be offering my last talk. I wish to give a talk on belief and faith from the spiritual point of view. Belief is usually in the mind, whereas faith is in the heart. Faith has conviction as its immediate neighbour. Belief does not discriminate. Faith is very careful. Human belief has two good friends: imagination and inspiration. Belief has rational values. Belief, in the human mind, quite often has to convince itself.
Faith is always giving and becoming. Belief has; faith is. In order to cultivate belief and faith in ourselves, we need two intimate and constant friends. Explore faith : Faith, Not Belief. Marcus Borg Hundere Professor of Religion and Culture Oregon State University Corvallis, Oregon (This sermon is also available in audio) Let us start with a brief moment in prayer. I am going to use a very short prayer from Dag Hammarskjold. Give us pure hearts that we may see You; Humble hearts that we may hear You; Hearts of love that we may serve You; Hearts of faith that we may abide in You. We are living in a time of major change in the church in North America. The great divide is between the mainline denominations on the one hand and our more conservative and fundamentalist Christian brothers and sisters on the other hand. One way of describing the conflict is to focus on the Bible. It is also a conflict about how to see Christianity in an age of religious pluralism. I turn now to expositing the four meanings. Sama Veda Yajur Veda. Creation in the Riga Veda: Creation hymns in Hinduism. Having discussed the philosophy of Creation from the Upanishads, it is worthwhile to examine in some detail what the Riga Veda has to say about it.
There are four important hymns about Creation in Chapter X. Since this is the last chapter it would be reasonable to assume that the hymns would portray fairly evolved Vedic thought. One has to realize that the hymns portray Creation in the figurative language of poetry. All four hymns speak unequivocally of One Creator – the Supreme God. In the Hymns LXXXI and LXXXII the Creator is named as Visvakarma. Hymn LXXXI asks the rhetorical question, “What was the tree, what wood in sooth produced it, from which they (Visvakarma’s arms) fashioned out the earth and heaven? Hymn LXXXII says that the primal seed rested on the “Unborn’s navel”. The four hymns referred to can be read in their entirety at the web site of Sacred Texts.
