How To Browse Your Linux Partition from Windows. Ever need to grab a file or two from your ext4 partition? Maybe you’ve wanted to backup a few important files while you were in Windows. Here’s how to browse your Linux partition from Windows using a tool called Ext2explore. Most Linux distributions nowadays use the ext4 partition by default, and while there are some tools that can read the older ext2 and ext3 partitions, Ext2explore (also known as Ext2Read) is the only one that we’ve seen that is able to read all three. In the spirit of Linux, it’s also open source. You can download Ext2explore from the Ext2Read Sourceforge page, and runs on Windows XP SP3, as well as Vista and 7 in compatibility mode. There is no installation for the utility, so just unzip the file.

Then, click on the Compatibility tab. Under “Compatibility Mode” choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop-down menu. Just double-click the program to launch it. You should see the main Ext2explore window: The program automatically scans your disks for ext partitions. How to Format a Secondary or External Hard Drive in Windows XP. 3 Ways to Access Your Linux Partitions From Windows. If you’re dual-booting Windows and Linux, you’ll probably want to access files on your Linux system from Windows at some point. Linux has built-in support for Windows NTFS partitions, but Windows can’t read Linux partitions without third-party software.

This list is focused on applications that support the Ext4 file system, which most new Linux distributions use by default. These applications all support Ext2 and Ext3, too – and one of them even supports ReiserFS. Ext2Fsd Ext2Fsd is a Windows file system driver for the Ext2, Ext3, and Ext4 file systems. It allows Windows to read Linux file systems natively, providing access to the file system via a drive letter that any program can access.

You can have Ext2Fsd launch at every boot or only open it when you need it. The Ext2 Volume Manager application allows you to define mount points for your Linux partitions and change Ext2Fsd’s settings. You’ll find your Linux partitions mounted at their own drive letters in Windows Explorer. Ext2explore. Quick vs. full format on your hard drive. Whether your computer is a desktop or laptop, your operating system needs to reside on some local drive, whether it’s a hard drive, or a USB flash drive, or FireWire drive. In any case, the drive needs to be formatted properly in order to store and retrieve any data. Why does it need to be formatted? When a hard disk drive is manufactured, unless you buy it ‘pre-formatted’, it’s primarily just a blank disc (actually, multiple disks) with a very smooth magnetic coating on both sides, and several read/write arms.

In order for data files to be stored and retrieved from the hard drive, it needs to be organized into sectors (or numbered containers), along with a table of contents, known as a master file table. This is how it knows where to find your files. It also needs a few other bits of info, to keep things in order, but I won’t go into that. On the other hand, full formatting erases everything on the partition (or the disk), including all data that was there (if any). Review, Istar HDD Docking Bay, S.M.A.R.T. Testing HDD's. Istar HDD Docking Bay Introduction Docking stations aren't new, but they've become a lot more common over the last few years as their chipsets become more standardized enabling true plug n' play operation without hassles or headaches. Docking stations are used to connect internal SATA hard drives to a computer via external interfaces such as USB 2.0 and Esata.

Without powering down the PC you can change out SATA drives as often as you wish by powering up/down the docking station separately. These features make a docking bay a very useful utility device. Docking bays can be used to format internal HDD's and prepare them for use without opening up your PC's case. Istar Dual Docking Bay There aren't many reviews of other information on these devices out there, and it's impossible to find side by side comparisons pitting one docking bay against another. The unit comes nicely boxed and packaged with the manuals, power supply, and enough cabling to connect via Esata or USB 2.0. Installation 1. 1. I have to say that the noise difference is dramatic and well worth it. However I am worried about the potential for problems after getting thoroughly confused by this thread which goes into much more detail about matching the CFM, RPM and wattage between the stock fan and an aftermarket fan.

Instead of trying to understand all of this, I took a leap of faith. I followed the many users in this thread who have had success with the Fractal Design 60mm Silent Series fan For those of you in the US looking for a place to buy this fan, I couldn't find any place that had reasonable prices and availability. Prior to installing the fan I took a screenshot of my Duo's Health tab in Frontview. I spent a lots, a lots of time to choose a NAS for my home office. Somehow it didnt even cross my mind that the noise could be a problem on a device designed for home use. It is. It's not like the noise is extremely loud like some of the measurements people posted show. My laptop's fan can make a louder noise with higher speeds than average noise from the NAS.

The problem is the relatively high pitch of the small fan that is annoyingly amplified by the case and not helped by the resonating caused by wooden furniture it stands on. And yes, I even added some insulation between the NAS and the furniture it stands on. I would not recommend this NAS to anyone who plans to stay in the same room with it. When I for the first time powered my DUO two weeks ago, I just couldn't believe the noise it was making.

It wasn't anything like jet taking off but there was this weird high pitched noise, similar kind you get from old tv's (you know, the ones with a tube ). I'm really sensitive to that kind of noise so it was quite irritating. Also, there was some lower frequency ringing noise as well, but it disappeared after I had installed two disks (with one disk it would get even louder). Couldn't ever imagine sleeping with my DUO. While searching for other users with noise problems, I found this thread and got excited. First I removed the drives and opened the case which was quite easy even though the screws were really tight. Removing the stock fan was a breeze. When I turned the DUO on, I first thought that it was broken as no sound came out of it.

I'm really happy with the Noctua even though installing it was a bit of a difficulty. How To Replace The Netgear Readynas Duo Fan. Home NAS Servers. A NAS or Network Attached Storage Server is a means of storing you files on a computer network such that they can be accessible by more than one machine whether it be Windows, Mac or Linux. A Home NAS Server can deliver much more than this basic file sharing functionality as they usually offer other features such as a Web Server, iTunes Server, a Bit Torrent client for downloading files from Peer to Peer file sharing sites and even offer solutions for streaming you multimedia content to your favourite games consoles such as the XBox 360, PlayStation 3 or Nintendo Wii.

As these NAS Servers are traditionally left on for long periods or usually continuously, it is important to use low powered hardware in order to minimise the ongoing cost of these devices. The 3 main ways of adding Network Attached Storage (NAS) to your home are Prebuilt NAS servers - dedicated small, quite, low cost and low powered servers Other File Serving Options - Sharing content out from PC's, Mac and Linux workstations. Network Attached Storage - NAS - Introduction to NAS. Background Historically, floppy drives have been widely used to share data files, but today the storage needs of the average person far exceed the capacity of floppies. Businesses now maintain an increasingly large number of electronic documents and presentation sets including video clips. Home computer users, with the advent of MP3 music files and JPEG images scanned from photographs, likewise require greater and more convenient storage.

Central file servers use basic client/server networking technologies to solve these data storage problems. In its simplest form, a file server consists of PC or workstation hardware running a network operating system (NOS) that supports controlled file sharing (such as Novell NetWare, UNIX® or Microsoft Windows). Hard drives installed in the server provide gigabytes of space per disk, and tape drives attached to these servers can extend this capacity even further.

What Is NAS? Like traditional file servers, NAS follows a client/server design. Unofficial ReadyNAS Guides — Manuals for the NetGear ReadyNAS. Firefly + NAS + iPhone + iTunes = awesome — Hodgin.ca.
