It's the Sugar, Folks

It may not be the only problem with the Standard American Diet, but it’s fast becoming clear that it’s the major one. A study published in the Feb. 27 issue of the journal PLoS One links increased consumption of sugar with increased rates of diabetes by examining the data on sugar availability and the rate of diabetes in 175 countries over the past decade. And after accounting for many other factors, the researchers found that increased sugar in a population’s food supply was linked to higher diabetes rates independent of rates of obesity.

In other words, according to this study, it’s not just obesity that can cause diabetes: sugar can cause it, too, irrespective of obesity. And obesity does not always lead to diabetes. The study demonstrates this with the same level of confidence that linked cigarettes and lung cancer in the 1960s. Related Resources. The Future Of Local Food In Todmorden. (2) Beyond Meat. Why Twitter’s Co-Founders are Betting Big on a Vegan Meat Startup. Twitter co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams are investing big in Beyond Meat, a start-up company that manufactures “the first plant protein that looks, feels, tastes, and acts like meat.”

In addition to tasting and feeling like “real meat,” the company’s lineup of products are also healthier than meat, with no cholesterol or saturated fat, but plenty of plant-based protein. A 3 oz serving of the chicken strips has just 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, and 19 grams of protein! Right now, Beyond Meat ships wholesale for less than the cost of most organic, free-range, and “natural” meats. Test Tube Meat Coming, But Stanford Biologist Hails New Meat Alternative. By: Jeremy Hsu, InnovationNewsDaily Senior Writer Published: 02/19/2012 05:43 PM EST on InnovationNewsDaily VANCOUVER — Meat lovers may not need to wait for the price of $250,000 test-tube hamburgers to drop.

Test Tube Meat Coming, But Stanford Biologist Hails New Meat Alternative

A researcher says that he has created a vegetable-based product capable of winning over the taste buds and wallets of meat and dairy lovers. Such success could singlehandedly help satiate the world’s growing appetite for meat — a desire that is expected to double meat consumption by 2050. The first such food capable of replicating the taste, texture and nutrition of animal products could very likely debut by the end of this year, said Patrick Brown, a molecular biologist at Stanford University. Docosahexaenoic acid. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid that is a primary structural component of the human brain, cerebral cortex, skin, sperm, testicles and retina.

Docosahexaenoic acid

It can be synthesized from alpha-linolenic acid or obtained directly from maternal milk or fish oil.[1] DHA's structure is a carboxylic acid (-oic acid) with a 22-carbon chain (docosa- is Greek for 22) and six (hexa-) cis double bonds (-en-);[2] with the first double bond located at the third carbon from the omega end.[3] Its trivial name is cervonic acid, its systematic name is all-cis-docosa-4,7,10,13,16,19-hexa-enoic acid, and its shorthand name is 22:6(n-3) in the nomenclature of fatty acids. Cold-water oceanic fish oils are rich in DHA. Most of the DHA in fish and multi-cellular organisms with access to cold-water oceanic foods originates from photosynthetic and heterotrophic microalgae, and becomes increasingly concentrated in organisms the further they are up the food chain.
