SharePoint Adoption: Content And Collaboration Is Just The Start. Intranet planning: An intranet model for success — Prescient Digital Media - intranet consultant, intranet consulting, intranet planning and Internet planning. By Toby Ward - The process of planning an intranet, and the role of executive management and end users in developing the plan, determines the potential success of an intranet. Success has many measures, and largely depends on subjective opinions, but regardless of the metric, I rarely see true intranet success.

I’ve worked with award winners (including companies that have won big intranet awards such as the Nielsen Norman 10 best intranets of the year), and I’ve worked with a lot of organizations and Fortune 500s that have better than average intranets. True intranet success is not often achieved (or held for long), and most intranet managers and champions at those companies often rate their own intranet as satisfactory at best – less than truly successful – and requiring a lot of work. The commitment, rigor and resources required to build and maintain a successful intranet or portal are significant. The model therefore visually depicts the significant importance of people. -Shel Holtz. 10 Best Intranets of 2011. 10 Best Intranets of 2009.

SharePoint: An Intranet Manager Perspective. As 2010 comes to an end and I start looking at the intranet business in 2011 there is no doubt in my mind that the topic at the top of the list of a substantial number of intranet managers is what strategy they should adopt towards using SharePoint 2010 as an intranet platform. Waiting for SharePoint 2010 Over the last three years they have been able to put off the decision because the CMS that they implemented at some time during 2004 - 2007 still had some life in it. It was also clear that SharePoint 2007 had some substantial issues. For an intranet manager one of these was the poor search functionality, as well as lack-luster social media and collaboration support. Aware that many of these issues would be addressed in SharePoint 2010 it was fairly easy to make a case for waiting to see what would be released in mid-2010.

The answer was a substantially improved development platform which in principle addressed many of the concerns around SharePoint 2007. The Pressure to Migrate. Differences between SharePoint as an intranet platform and SharePoint as a collaboration platform « Thinking Records. I spoke about SharePoint to an audience of intranet managers yesterday. The talk was at J Boye’s ‘SharePoint at work’ event in Copenhagen. I made the following points: • SharePoint is not the first platform that an organisation could use both for their intranet and for their general collaboration/document management environment. But it is the first platform to be market leader in both spheres. • Managing a collaboration/document management environment is a different ball game from managing an intranet environment. • The scale is different.

In an intranet environment you can expect a sub-section of the organisation to contribute a small amount of content on a monthly basis. In a collaboration/document management environment you may reach the point where most of the organisation are contributing on a daily basis. • The risks are different. . • Your records manager may want to use content types to apply retention rules and/or to route documents to a records centre.
