Restricted-Range Fishes and the Conservation of Brazilian Freshwaters

Although recent assessments provide data on global priority regions for freshwater conservation, local scale priorities remain unknown. Refining the scale of global biodiversity assessments (both at terrestrial and freshwater realms) and translating these into conservation priorities on the ground remains a major challenge to biodiversity science, and depends directly on species occurrence data of high taxonomic and geographic resolution. Brazil harbors the richest freshwater ichthyofauna in the world, but knowledge on endemic areas and conservation in Brazilian rivers is still scarce. Methodology/Principal Findings Using data on environmental threats and revised species distribution data we detect and delineate 540 small watershed areas harboring 819 restricted-range fishes in Brazil.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau AC (French: [ʒak iv kusto]; commonly known in English as Jacques Cousteau; 11 June 1910 – 25 June 1997)[1] was a French naval officer, explorer, conservationist, filmmaker, innovator, scientist, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water.

Jacques Cousteau

He co-developed the Aqua-Lung, pioneered marine conservation and was a member of the Académie française. Biography "The sea, the great unifier, is man's only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: We are all in the same boat. "[citation needed] Jacques Cousteau Early years Cousteau was born on 11 June 1910, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Gironde, France to Daniel and Élisabeth Cousteau. Early 1940s: Innovation of modern underwater diving In 1943, they made the film Épaves (Shipwrecks), in which they used two of the very first Aqua-Lung prototypes. Late 1940s: GERS and Élie Monnier 1950–1970s In 1949, Cousteau left the French Navy.

Jellyfish Lake, Palau (images via: Ah Boon) Most people first learned about Jellyfish Lake while watching Survivor: Palau or Survivor: Micronesia, in which a trip to swim in a secluded lake full of stingless jellyfish was the prize for winning a reward challenge.

TheBlu: An Ambitious Project to Virtually Map the Oceans

TheBlu, which just received a seed round of angel investment, is a worldwide art project focused on mapping out the oceans. Let me explain. TheBlu is a web application that lets users "dive in" to the ocean and explore its species. It's sort of like a social networking game, because users are able to discover new species, share them with friends via Facebook, and even purchase more of that species to fill up their own personal "tank," or ocean. But TheBlu isn't just any old entertainment app--it's a Wikipedia-like collaborative art project that's backed by some pretty impressive names, including Avatar animation supervisor Andy Jones, MIT Media Lab Director Joichi Ito, and National Geographic Explorer in Residence Sylvia Earle.

At the moment, TheBlu is still in progress (and it probably always will be, to some extent). Salto do Yucumã.
