§. Polydactyl cat rescues US animal shelter. 9 December 2011Last updated at 21:00 Daniel, who was to be adopted, has instead become Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center's mascot An unusual cat is helping a Wisconsin animal rescue centre raise money to relocate to a new building. The orange-and-white tabby, named Daniel, has two extra toes on each paw as a result of a mutation called polydactylism. He has a total of 26. Milwaukee Animal Rescue Center, which will see its rent doubled on 1 January, asked for small donations of $26 (£17), one dollar for each toe. Out of a total $86,000 raised so far, $50,000 has come from small donations. The shelter, which takes in animals that might otherwise be euthanised, had said it would struggle to meet the new rent level for their premises at a Milwaukee-area shopping mall.

It has been seeking cash to help buy a new building to enable a permanent relocation, and with many $26 donations now says it has the financing to do so. A version of this resource is also available in our 'Introducing STEM Careers' series, a set of resources to support science teachers in integrating STEM careers information with practical activities.

See 'Introducing STEM Careers - Conserving endangered species at Kew'. "Cloning cauliflowers" in the classroom is a popular way to look at tissue culture and totipotency. Plant cell/tissue culture is the in-vitro culture of sterilised plant cells, tissues and/or organs on a nutrient medium. Unlike animal cells, many plant cells are totipotent, meaning that each cell has the capacity to regenerate the entire plant. This fact lies at the foundation of all tissue culture work. Micropropagation is the regeneration of whole plants from small pieces of plant material. Previous versions of this cloning protocol have tended to risk contamination on the cauliflower floret, but this updated version, if followed correctly, is generally found to be very reliable.

B4. B5. B6. Fibre and whole grains 'reduce bowel cancer risk' 11 November 2011Last updated at 01:21 High fibre cereals are just one type of fibre which were shown to help prevent colorectal cancer Eating more cereals and whole grains could reduce the risk of developing colorectal cancer, a BMJ study says. Researchers from Imperial College London found that for every 10g a day increase in fibre intake, there was a 10% drop in the risk of bowel cancer.

But their analysis of 25 previous studies found that fruit and vegetable fibre did not reduce risk. A cancer charity called for more detailed research on the quantity and type of fibre to eat. Eating fibre and whole grains is known to help protect against cardiovascular disease, but experts say that any link with colorectal cancer is less clear because studies have not had consistent results. Reviewing the results of all previous observational studies in this area, researchers in London, Leeds and the Netherlands analysed data provided by almost two million people.
