Russia launches Proton-M rocket with Dutch telesat. Platform for report news, views and opinions powered by citizen journalism and social media. You share. We air. diggdigg Russia conducted the launch of a Proton-M rocket with a telecommunications satellite late Monday. According to Russia’s federal space agency Roscosmos, the Russian Proton-M launch vehicle carrying the Dutch SES-5 telecoms satellite lifted off from the Baikonur Space Centre in Kazakhstan after a series of delays, RIA Novosti reported. The SES-5, built by US company Space Systems/Loral for the Dutch operator SES World Skies, has been designed to provide various satellite services to customers in Africa, Middle East and Europe. “The launch occurred at the calculated time. Russia earlier deferred Proton-M rocket’s launch twice due to technical reasons, Xinhua reported.

On June 19, the rocket was removed from its launching pad ahead of the launch due to a technical error, according to Roscosmos. Samsung did not copy 'cool' Apple iPad: Court. Platform for report news, views and opinions powered by citizen journalism and social media. You share. We air. diggdigg The British High Court has ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy Tab range does not unlawfully copy the iPad’s “cool” minimalist design, The Telegraph reported. Apple sued its Korean rival last year, insisting that the Galaxy Tab design “slavishly copies” the iPad.

In a judgment published Monday the High Court rejected the claims. There was some consolation for Apple, however, after a judge ruled that Samsung’s designs were “not as cool” as the iPad, the newspaper said Monday. The case is part of a bitter, worldwide intellectual property row between Apple and manufacturers of smartphones and tablets that run Google’s Android mobile operating system. The defeat is Apple’s second at the High Court in less than a week. Apple declined to comment on the iPad design judgment, but reiterated its earlier claims against Samsung. The death of UK comedy? London club owner speaks out. Diggdigg Noel Faulkner, Irish owner of London’s Comedy Cafe in London’s trendy Shoreditch, is never less than forthright. He told me what he really thinks of the state of the current comedy business in the UK. “The game is really played-out,” he said. “I think ‘arena comedy’ has really done it damage, because 60,000 people at a time can go and see comedy now.

“I’d say the average comedy punter used to go to a club maybe four times a year. “But also,” I suggested, “they pay to see a known quality at the O2 whereas, if they go to a club, it may be hit-and-miss.” “Not if you come to the Comedy Cafe,” said Noel. “But, in general, you think comedy clubs are going down the tubes?” “Yeah. “What effect did the Euro 2012 football on TV have on attendances?” “Well,” he replied. “Yet you’re going back to stand-up comedy yourself,” I said. “Well,” he corrected me, “I started out as a dancer in Ireland and, because I have Tourette Syndrome, it’s easy being a dancer because of the twitching. “No.” Georgia: State Modernisation by Decentralisation. Diggdigg After the downfall of the Tsar Empire, Georgia gained her independence on May 26th, 1918 – a dream that lasted only three years, until Stalin’s homeland was again compelled to be part to the new USSR. President Mikhail Saakashvili chose this memorable Georgian day to announce the formal conveyance of Parliament to Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city.

This decision is the result of a double political will, namely decentralisation and institutional protection, quelling potential threats and attacks from pro-Russian separatists. Since rising to power in 2004, President Saakashvili has primarily focused his attention on the economy, in order to break the country out of its dismal economic performance that followed in the post-Soviet period. This reflects just a few of the goals set by Saakashvili’s administration, in addition to the fight against corruption in the business world of Georgia. Photo: Allvoices.

Protect coral reefs, say scientists. Platform for report news, views and opinions powered by citizen journalism and social media. You share. We air. diggdigg Top marine scientists have sounded an alarm over the plight of coral reefs worldwide and the livelihood of millions of people dependent on them. In an unprecedented move, more than 2,000 of the world’s leading marine researchers released in Cairns, Australia, their Consensus Statement on Climate Change and Coral Reefs. They are attending the 12th International Coral Reef Symposium in Australia.

Terry Hughes, convener of the symposium and director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, said: “When it comes to coral reefs, prevention is better than cure. “Unfortunately, the rush to get as much fossil fuel out of the ground as quickly as possible before the transition to alternative sources of energy occurs, has pushed environmental concerns far into the background,” Hughes was quoted as saying in an ARC Centre statement.

Facebook, Twitter lowering your confidence? Diggdigg Ever felt low if your friend gets more likes or tweets than you? You’re not alone. Comparisons on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter make people feel anxious and under-confident, according to a poll. The poll also found that more than half said these sites had altered their behaviour, especially suffering a negative impact from social media. Two-thirds said they were unable to relax or to doze off after spending time on the sites. And one quarter of those polled said they had been left facing difficulties in their relationships or workplace after becoming confrontational online, the Telegraph reported. In total, 298 people were polled by Salford Business School at the University of Salford, for the charity Anxiety UK.

The research also demonstrated the addictive powers of internet, with 55 percent of people saying they felt “worried or uncomfortable” when they could not access their Facebook or e-mail accounts. Entangled in economic crisis, Spain sends 5,000 horses a month to slaughter. Platform for report news, views and opinions powered by citizen journalism and social media. You share. We air. The economic crisis in Spain is sending almost 5,000 horses a month to the slaughterhouse and has increased the number of animals abandoned because their owners can no longer afford to keep them. The number of horses slaughtered increased by 31 percent in the first four months of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011, to a total of 19,793, according to official figures.

Pounds also have a waiting list of several months to be able to handle about 165 animals a day, the immense majority of which are horses. The secretary general of the Professional Association of Slaughterhouses and Meat-packing Companies, Manuel Gonzalez, said that since “there is no market” for selling, renting or breaking-in horses at the moment, some breeders find themselves unable to afford the high cost of feeding the animals, estimated at an average of 300 euros ($369) each per month. According to the 2012 Chinese Auto Industry Development Report, Chinese hybrid cars cannot save fuel as efficiently as their foreign competitors. #SomeoneTellCNN trends worldwide, forces CNN to apologise.

The Great Deluge [Poetic take] `Europe’s debt crisis to be prolonged’ Platform for report news, views and opinions powered by citizen journalism and social media. You share. We air. diggdigg Europe’s debt crisis has the nature of protracting and consistently existing due to the failure to tackle the region’s fundamental structural problems, South Korea’s finance minister said Friday.

“If we can call the 2008 global financial crisis a one-time thunderstorm, then the current crisis is like a seemingly incessant rainy season we are being encountered now,” Strategy and Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan told foreign correspondents in Seoul. European leaders agreed on short-term measures to help ease the region’s crisis, but the market has judged these measures lack detailed action plans and a time table to address the eurozone’s structural problems, Xinhua quoted Bahk as saying.
