ICC defers Kenyan president's trial to February

You share. We air. diggdigg The International Criminal Court (ICC) Thursday postponed the trial of Kenyan President Kenyatta to Feb 5, 2014. A statement from the world court obtained here said the ICC Trial Chamber V (b) noted that both the defense and the prosecutor are in agreement on postponing the trial date, Xinhua reported. “The Chamber urged both parties to accelerate their preparation in order to ensure that no further postponements are required,” it said. Kenyatta, his deputy William Ruto and radio journalist Joshua Sang face the ICC trial for their alleged roles in murders, deportation or forcible transfer of population, and persecution during Kenya’s 2007-2008 post-election violence.

Quirico, a correspondent for Turin’s la Stampa newspaper and an experienced war reporter, entered Syria April 6 to cover the civil war and the paper has not heard from him since April 9. In a statement Friday on World Press Freedom Day, an European Union official expressed “disquiet” over the fate of the 62-year-old Quirico. “This year, we signal our disquiet over Domenico Quirico, who vanished in Syria more than 20 days ago,” said European Commission spokesman Olivier Bailly. “We express our solidarity to him, his family and to the newsdesk of La Stampa.” La Stampa ran an eight-page special on Quirico in its Friday edition.

You share. We air. diggdigg A journalist with Nuestro Diario newspaper was fatally shot in the eastern Guatemalan province of Jutiapa, the publication said Thursday. Jaime Napoleon Jarquin Duarte, 63, was a former schoolteacher who joined the paper three years ago, Nuestro Diario said. Three friends who happened to be with the reporter at the time of the assault were wounded. The incident took place Wednesday night in Ciudad Pedro de Alvarado, a town on the border with El Salvador.

Ramon Abel Lopez Aguilar, 53, was a photographer and editor of the news web site Tijuana Informativo. His son-in-law, 22-year-old Raul Vazquez Hernandez, confessed to shooting Lopez Aguilar, Baja California state prosecutor Abel Galvan told a press conference in Tijuana.

Vazquez Hernandez said he shot his father-in-law twice in the head during a heated argument as they were sitting inside a vehicle, according to Galvan. Both men had been drinking.
