They are intended for informal display. Pin-up girls are glamor models, fashion models, and actresses. Pin-up may also refer to drawings, paintings and other illustrations done in emulation of these photos (see the List of pinup artists). Many pin ups were photographs of celebrities who were considered sex symbols. The term “cheesecake” is synonymous with pin-up photo. Here you can see that photos of these beautiful and glamorous girls, actresses and models were not put only on calendars, or in magazines, but also on many other artifacts that are in every day use, such as a deck of playing cards.
Nell Brinkley. Nell Brinkley (September 5, 1886 – October 21, 1944) was an American illustrator and comic artist who was sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Comics" during her nearly four-decade career working with New York newspapers and magazines. She was the creator of the iconic Brinkley Girl, a stylish character who appeared in her comics and became a popular symbol in songs, films and theater. [ edit ] Background and career Nell Brinkley was born in Denver , Colorado , in 1886 (some sources say 1888), but her family soon moved to the small town of Edgewater on Denver's western border, facing Sloan's Lake at Manhattan Beach.
She was not formally trained in the arts, and dropped out of high school to follow her natural talent with pen and ink. The likes of Gil Elvgren, Coby Whitmore, Al Buell, Andrew Loomis, Ben Stahl, Robert Skemp, Robert Bensing, and the legendary Haddon Sundblom provided Coca-Cola with an unprecendented stable of talent to generate Coca-Cola's image and message. Coca-Cola's Calendar Girls were as amply endowed with wholesomeness as they were with natural American pulchritude. This would be a highly persuasive combination in and of itself.
Indeed, it had become the practice between the 1920's and 1930's, especially, to produce pinup calendars for all manner of businesses to promote their particular service or commodity.
