On Hiring. Now that a landmark study conducted by the Community College Research Center at Columbia University has confirmed that students at two-year campuses perform worse in online courses than in the face-to-face version, perhaps we can move on the important question: What can we do about that? Many of the suggestions I’ve read — from those not still in denial — have to do with improving the quality of online teaching, offering institutional support for online students, and so forth.

I’m not sure that’s the right approach, because my impression is that most institutions are already doing those things. A decade ago, when we first began noticing lower success rates in online sections, our initial response was to work at improving the courses and the way we offer them. By and large, we succeeded. That’s why attempts to increase student success by improving the way we “do” online are doomed to fall short. The answer, I believe, lies not in improving our courses but in improving our students. #edtech20 project Twitter tweets related to: Sync, Cohuman, Edtech20, Elearning, Socialmedia and more. #edtech20 project Twitter tweets related to: Knowledge, Iphone, Handbook, Mlearning, Edtech20 and more.

Mobile Learning # 6: Six key m-learning resources. How do you feel about housework? Personally, I’m not a big fan. But in a recent fit of (late) spring cleaning, I decided to sort out my mobile learning bookmarks in delicious, in preparation for some research I’m doing on the topic. And voila! I came across all sorts of fantastic stuff I had forgotten about. Given the power of lists, here are 6 key (to me) mobile learning resources.

Actually, this is cheating a bit, because some of the key resources in my list of resources are themselves lists of key resources. If you know what I mean. What are these resources good for? Mobile learning used to imply laptop computers. But now, with a host of new and more powerful mobile learning devices available (including tablets and smart phones, with all kinds of corresponding learning “apps”), the definition of “mobile learning” has expanded tremendously.

This opens a new world of possibilities for extending the learning time for students, and making learning more participatory for them. For example, whereas with laptops you needed to be in range of a Wi-Fi network to get internet access, with a smart phone or tablet with wireless 3G connectivity you can get online from virtually anywhere. This truly delivers on the promise of “anytime, anywhere” learning. Yet, as the choices now available to schools have multiplied, so, too, have the questions and concerns. —The Editors Leveraging the Power of Mobile Learning Survey highlights changing teacher opinions on ed tech ‘Bring your own device’ catching on in schools Experts give advice on mobile learning.

Mobile Apps for Education. Cellularlearning.org. 039;s back to school guide: Mobile phones. Welcome to Engadget's Back to School guide! We know that this time of year can be pretty annoying and stressful for everyone, so we're here to help out with the heartbreaking process of gadget buying for the school-aged crowd. Today, we have mobile phones in our sights -- and you can head to the Back to School hub to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month.

Back in our day, the only "mobile phone" at school was the one that broke off the dorm wall after our roommates got a little too rowdy, but nowadays, a capable, high-power handset is quickly becoming a must-have for students of all ages. Regardless of your budget, your parent's budget, or your little one's budget, we've got options that should help with studying, gaming, music, and maybe even the occasional call home.
