Bay Area Startup Weekend

As Douglas Crets of Microsoft BizSpark noted , we started the weekend with ”the entrepreneur spirit that gets us fired up enough to get mad about problems–and create solutions” , thanks to Dave McClure ‘s riveting keynote welcome speech. Scott Case from Startup America , John Cabrera, Writer of Warner Brother’s H+: The Digital Series , and Hiten Shah, of KISSmetrics also welcomed the crowd. MEGA Startup Weekend Bay Area focused on three tracks: mobile, gaming and with the help of Andra Keay - robotics ! The weekend brought together people with different skillsets – primarily software developers, graphics designers, roboticists, and business professionals – to build applications, robots and gaming platforms, and develop a commercial case around them in 54 hours. In total, 28 teams that built their idea and pitched to a panel of judges. http://bayarea.startupweekend.org/

Monday Workshops

http://www.web2expo.com/webexsf2010/public/schedule/stype/intensive This workshop sets the record straight on what works and what doesn’t in community measurement. Effective social media comes from having the guts to try unique, memorable campaigns, the discipline to measure their successes and failures, and the wisdom to learn from the results. That’s what applied community analytics is about, and it’s what you’ll learn in this workshop. Read more .

http://www.web2expo.com/webexsf2010/public/schedule/grid/2010-05-04 It's become somewhat fashionable of late to refer to HTML5 and the web stack as a "Flash killer". The Flash/Flex community, understandably, has not suffered this kind of talk quietly. The ongoing absence of Flash from Apple's wildly popular portable devices has only fueled the fire. Openness, stability, ubiquity, consistency, and security are all thrown around like the discs of Tron.

RESTful web services play well with web servers, browsers, proxies, search engines, and other HTTP agents through the correct use of headers, verbs, response codes, and markup. On the surface, this is straightforward. But sometimes creativity can be required in order to achieve all of our requirements while respecting the principals of REST. Read more .

Security, compliance, confidentiality, data loss prevention, brand reputation, and human resource concerns (i.e., ethics/conduct) are issues that organizations cannot ignore.

Wednesday Sessions

For 2010, we continue the tradition of showcasing innovative and promising new companies at Web 2.0 Expo. While the definition of a launch has gotten cloudy in this age of public betas, we’re looking for new companies or products that make us take notice. And while venture capital has been the focus in past years, the reality of the market is that companies must gain the attention of customers. So our judging panel and criteria this year focus more on what is essential and transformational in today’s market than on ability to get funded.
