Ex-Microsoft Designer Explains the Move Away from Metro. Windows Phone fans pining for the days of Metro panoramas and integrated experiences have had a tough couple of years, with Microsoft steadily removing many of the platform’s user experience differentiators. But as I’ve argued, there’s reason behind this madness. And now an ex-Microsoft design lead who actually worked on Windows Phone has gone public and agreed with this assessment. You may have loved Windows Phone and Metro, but it had to change. As a backgrounder, be sure to familiarize yourself with my earlier take on this situation, Five Years Later, a Full-On Retreat from What Made Windows Phone Special. In that post, I showed that Microsoft has slowly removed all of Windows Phone’s key differentiators over the past five years but that it had to for a variety of reasons.

Now, you can see a more internal view of what happened. Why a hamburger menu? Why is the hamburger menu in the top left of the display? But people need to be able to use it with one hand. But the bottom is better. Waleed A. Alballaa sur Twitter : "كرسي مستوحى من الخط الديواني #Design... DIWANI Sculptural Rocker by AE Superlab. Inspired by Arabic Diwani calligraphic script, Ahmed ElHusseiny of AE Superlab, designed a sculptural rocker with a flowing form.

The DIWANI CHAIR’s linear “ribs” fit together to form an overall minimal design that was carefully crafted through precise engineering. The curvy, sensuous silhouette is exaggerated by the dramatic lowness and depth of the seat, while the contoured shape gives the feeling that you’d want to lean back and lounge. The chair was designed and fabricated in Brooklyn, New York with CNC routed sections of high-strength, cross-laminated plywood that is then carefully assembled and hand finished by local craftsmen. The initial, limited run of the chair will be available in either white birch or a customizable multi-colored plywood. This is How Beautiful the Leather Looks on a Moto X (2nd Gen) After 3 Months. As you can imagine, there were plenty of skeptics who questioned Motorola’s decision to offer Horween leather as an option through Moto Maker with the new Moto X (2nd gen). Leather certainly isn’t as durable, at least in most cases, when compared to plastic or wood.

It’s soft, after all, so on one level, I can understand that point of view. But I can tell you that from the minute I first held a leather-backed Moto X in my hand at the phone’s unveiling, I knew exactly which version I would go with if I were to buy one – you guessed it, leather. What a fantastic decision that was. I have now had my leather-backed Moto X for just over three months. Take a look at the picture below of the “natural” backed Moto X fresh out of the box (left side), next to black leather and bamboo. Quite the change, right? My Moto X (2nd gen) in leather shows the scrapes from fingernails, oils from my hand, tooth marks from my son, and most of all, the abuse it gets put through on a daily basis. UI VS UX: Similarities & Dissimilarities. The simple definition of UI (User Interface) is that it is a part of the product which is being seen by the user when he looks into the site, where as the UX (User Experience) is what they feel when they see the site.

UX is a term which has its meaning in a much broader way than that of the UI. In a nutshell we will focus on UI Vs UX during the entire article. After figuring out the form factor, it's got to communicate with multiple devices and protocols, while not becoming outdated as soon as the underlying technology advances. At a Smart Design salon this week on “The Agony & Ecstasy of Connected Devices: Tales from the front Line, ” four experts playing in the space talked about how to have the best shot at bringing a successful connected product to market.

Here's what they said. Does It Solve A Problem? In creating a connected device for the Internet of Things as we know it, for me the most important thing as a designer--though I’m wearing a strategy hat--is to ask the question: "What problem are we trying to solve? " Kevin Lee, director of strategy at Samsung Design America. Is It A Good User Experience? Milestones and Missteps UX Design Review for 2013: Winners and Losers… Not the Usual Suspects.

2013 UX year in review: In terms of User Experience (UX) milestones and missteps, 2013 failed to produce industry-altering innovations like 2007 with the introduction of the first iPhone or 2012 with the demise of Blackberry. Yet on another level, UX design in 2013 gave us a glimpse at the rapidly broadening definition of UX design as a structural concept and its role in the future of new media device design, content creation and even the status of product reviews created by leading tech journalists. In a critical way, I personally find this more interesting than blockbuster introductions that alter the technology landscape. Specifically, 2013 showed us that companies can generate huge sums on Wall Street and still have UX design that would have been judged dysfunctional in 2002 (Twitter).
