There are some things in life that make me feel dated (notice I didn’t use the word “old” LOL). For example, sending a fax, writing in cursive (with a pen) and talking on any phone with a cord (and twirling it around my fingers) are all things that kids born in 2011 might never have the opportunity to experience. I remember back in the days when people would say, “ I wish I had my camera with me today, I could have taken some great pictures. ” Now that practically everyone has a smartphone, we all have our cameras with us everywhere we go. As a result, the photography we see these days is phenomenal.
Some of the magic beauty of glacier ice lies under its outer surface. One either needs to strip the surface layer or go underneath it to see its real beauty. The centuries old ice coming down the slopes of Svinafellsjokull glacier has had almost all of the air pressed out. Once air has been pressed out it turns into this magically blue crystal like ice. The outer surface of this ice (the surface of the glacier) gets bombarded by weather, sun-rays, dust and other things and it transforms the crystal blue ice white. Hidden under the white surface is the blue ice.

I can't recall how I ran into Ben Canales' photostream on Flickr , but I'm sure glad I did. He offers up not only stellar night photography, but also a humble and inspirational spirit that encourages other photographers to try it out. Here are 10 examples of his phenomenal work -- including an image that took top prize in the National Geographic Travel Photo competition -- and a great video where he teaches us the techniques he uses to get these shots. ShutterSalt readers, you've proven you're in love with the Milky Way. The post I put up of Terje Sorgjerd's jaw-dropping timelapse video of the milky way has already racked up nearly 2 million pageviews. So when I saw Canales' work, I knew you'd be excited to check it out -- and even learn how to take these images yourself.

This is only small part of my underwater work at the White Sea Biological Station. When I went underwater for the first time I was absolutely shocked. White Sea showed me another world with it's own aliens, and some of them were really amazing creatures.
In defense of Sean, I, too, wondered where are the people with truly African features…with truly dark skin, beautifully kinky hair, etc. I don’t mean those with some European features like straight hair (many Somalians, Ethiopians, or Morrocans) or thin noses. I mean those who embody what it means to look African.
