Not long after that I realized the issues with scripting in as3+js (even with adobe air) lots of restrictions and limiations, really not ideal for a software, so I spent some time to re-program everything on the nodegraph side without the complication of as3+html webdialog+js. The baisc framework is now working i.e. node sequence, connections, special node(slider), communication between the 2 software, referencing sketchup entities, auto evaluate on changes etc., nothing much changed on the ruby side for now. hopefully I can make this available after getting a few examples done along with a basic tool palette to work with points, vectors, lines and faces. This definition was written to speed up the process of creating a contour model while limiting the amount of waste generated during the fabrication of the physical model.

An interface was developed within Grasshopper where all of the important settings can be controlled, allowing those who know little about grasshopper to still use the definition. A base surface is supplied to grasshopper, which then scales the surface, cuts the cross sections according to the contour step size, then orients the cross sections to the XY plane. There are two options for layout of the contours: full sheet or optimized sheets. Full sheet is exactly what it sounds like, the contour at each level is placed on its own sheet. RhinoFabLab - Design + Optimization + Fabrication. Parametric Folding « i.M.A.D.E. As part of the semester-long seminar course “Parametric Constructions” , students explored various parametric design methods and digital fabrication techniques through a series of full scale constructs produced in groups of two or three students while working in a collaborative effort with local industry partners.

Entitled Parametric Folding, this project consisted of laser cut aluminum panels with a customized patterning and custom bent angles and hardware. The success of this project was contingent on the collaborative effort between the three student designers and a local metal fabricator, Midwest Metals. Through out the design process, digital files were produced based on the requirements set by the manufacturer that were used to directly control the laser cutter. The production of full-scale prototypes was essential to the development of this project—three full-scale study models were made to test and explore connection methods for the various system components.
