It won't go into effect until next year, but San Francisco's ban on handing out toys with children's meals that have more than 600 calories or too much fat, salt and sugar gained final passage Tuesday. San Francisco supervisors (they're called supervisors because San Francisco is both a city and a county, and in California, counties are overseen by supervisors) voted 8 to 3 in favor of the measure. It now goes to Mayor Gavin Newsom, who has promised to veto it. But the board has enough votes to override his veto. The measure has been widely ridiculed in some circles, with opponents saying it's up to parents to choose what their children eat -- not politicians. But public health advocates welcomed the action, calling it a small step toward combatting escalating levels of childhood obesity. Supervisor Eric Mar, who introduced the measure, said supporters were part of a growing movement to help children fight obesity and nutrition-related diseases. -- Sharon Bernstein.

Lea Suzuki/The Chronicle Goodbye to the toy? A board committee today found Supervisor Eric Mar’s legislation banning toys in Happy Meals downright delicious, recommending the full board approve it. Mar has proposed banning toys in McDonalds’ Happy Meals and other meals targeted at kids unless their sugar, sodium and fat totals are limited and they include a half-cup apiece of fruit and vegetables. Mar maintains “the modest effort” will help curb the burgeoning levels of obesity in children.
Many pediatricians spoke in favor of the ban, one from San Francisco General even telling the supes of seeing waiting rooms full of kids clutching soda, chips and Chicken McNuggets. (Isn’t that like riding the brakes on your way to get your car serviced?) The full board is due to take up the controversial issue on October 19, and Mayor Gavin Newsom has already pledged to veto it. “I feel like I can see both sides of it, and I’m trying to navigate in my head what’s the right way to go,” Dufty told us.

By Anita Jones-MuellerMay 2010 Most Americans assume they will experience the effects of the newly passed national health care reform in their doctor’s office, neighborhood hospital and through their paycheck withholdings. But they will also find evidence of the new legislation at many of their favorite restaurants.
That’s because the health care reform bill also requires restaurants with 20 or more locations to post calorie counts on menus and menu boards. How did this new, national menu labeling legislation come about? In the last few years, twenty-two states have passed or were considering menu labeling, either statewide or within regions, and the threat of additional states considering the legislation was expected to grow. NRA supports the new standardized labeling legislation The regional and state-based provisions have varying requirements, making it complicated for chains operating in multiple areas. Now that the bill is passed, restaurants have a lot of questions. Businesses For Sale - Buy a Restaurant - Sell a Restaurant. Businesses For Sale - Buy a Restaurant - Sell a Restaurant.
