"Leonora Carrington" - Flickr: Search. Index2. Leonora Carrington: last of the great Surrealists. An artist – an avant-garde, famous artist at that – living in Mexico, a member of my own family, estranged from us for almost 70 years: it sounded too thrilling to be real.
When I got home I looked up Leonora’s paintings online, and found myself being drawn into a strange world of figures that seemed half-human, half-animal; a world of exotic birds and galloping horses; a world full, or so it seemed, of women (where were all the men?) And mysterious houses where creatures passed through floors and walls and the geese in the kitchen dwarfed the sinister, mask-clad figures who were about to roast them. Her world seemed full of weird and wonderful happenings; it looked packed with adventures and fun and oddness and humour.
