Blueberry Buttermilk Cake. Blueberries were on sale this week at my supermarket…only 99 cents a pint! I promptly made several trips to the store and bought as many blueberries as I could possibly buy in one trip. My mom did the same. We now have more blueberries than we can possibly eat while still fresh, but whatever. So many blueberries in my fridge only forces me to make many, many, many blueberry things…I see no problem with this. I decided I wanted to make something simple, an everyday sort of cake that required few ingredients, little time to prepare, and no decorating. Feel free to substitute the blueberries in the recipe for any other type of berry that you prefer or have on hand.

Cranberry Orange & Pecan Coffee Cake. This weekend I found myself in one of those expensive clothing boutiques that I really… really had no business being in. You know those stores: random things cost three hundred dollars and you have no idea why. Yea… I realized something crazy ridiculous while browsing around. The only sizes displayed on the racks were sizes 0, 2, and 4.

Um…. this business practice does not at all agree with my thighs. It’s like… Ok, fancy boutique, I see the ways in which you glorify size tiny while simultaneously work to undermine my confidence… but I happen to be happy with this body that I inhabit and I would hope that you would respect that, and reflect my needs among your offensively expensive offerings. I’m outraged and appalled (ok… i’m totally being dramatic) and I would like for you to pass the cake. First things first: if you’re going to make one loaf of this coffee cake, you dang-sure might as well make two loaves. Done and done. Now bust out that flour. The architecture of baking. Blueberry Boy Bait. I love desserts with an interesting name or story. In my blueberry baking frenzy this weekend, I came across this recipe for Blueberry Boy Bait from Brown Eyed Baker. The recipe was entered into a Pillsbury Bake-off contest in 1954 by a 15 year old girl and was named this because it was the effect boys had when they ate her dessert.

One bite and they were hooked! I wondered if the cake would have a similar effect on Boyfriend… The cake tasted a bit like a coffee cake, but not quite as dense or sweet. I enjoyed the sugary cinnamony crust and the taste of blueberries in the batter. The cake was pretty simple to put together. Strawberry Cake « Cake. Have you ever invented a cake? Not discovered. Invented. No? Me neither. Just until last week when I was sitting in my kitchen munching on my two all-time favorite delights - a bundt cake and a strawberry smoothie. And that was when it happened. That was when the idea struck me… “What if… ?” “What if I merged these two things so that they become one somehow?” “What if it was possible?” And right then – at that very precious moment – this strawberry cake was born. I think my life is complete now. These are the lovely ingredients that I used. And these are canned strawberries. I love the way they look and the way they taste.

It’s unbelievable how great the relationship between strawberries and light sugar syrup can become. Yum! Of course, you can use fresh strawberries, if you prefer those. 1. Sorry. Strawberry buttermilk cake. I woke up yesterday wanting cake. Not wanting to eat cake, so much, although that part is nice, but wanting to watch butter and sugar swirl in the mixer bowl and gradually turn into a smooth batter. This despite plans to make Danish dough, two Danish fillings, fajitas, grapefruit cookies (which didn’t happen because I’d gotten my mixer fix with the cake), and a batch of Tartine country bread dough to freeze (which didn’t happen because I ran out of flour).

No one said anything about being practical. I started poking around the internet for recipes, and chose this one because it uses buttermilk, which I have right now, and it wasn’t loaded with butter, which is always nice when you’re planning to eat cake for breakfast. I did not have any fresh berries, but I always keep strawberries in the freezer for our weekday smoothies. The cake was everything I’d been craving.
