In April 2000, The Yale University Art Gallery purchased the 193 prints that compose Robert Adams’s What We Bought: The New World, a body of work that had been completed by the American photographer twenty-five years before. The unusual number, and quality, of these photographs distinguished this purchase as an extraordinary addition to the Gallery’s collections. Even more remarkable, however, was that the group as a whole constituted the single complete set of this signature work that Adams ever produced. How did this powerful collection of pictures, printed in a unique edition by the most restlessly inventive photographer of the American landscape since Edward Weston, remain intact for more than two decades before becoming available for acquisition, or even being exhibited?
