The editor has written me that he is in favor of avoiding “the notion that the artist is a kind of ape that has to be explained by the civilized critic”. This should be good news to both artists and apes. With this assurance I hope to justify his confidence. To use a baseball metaphor (one artist wanted to hit the ball out of the park, another to stay loose at the plate and hit the ball where it was pitched), I am grateful for the opportunity to strike out for myself. I will refer to the kind of art in which I am involved as conceptual art. Conceptual art is not necessarily logical. Venetian Color and Florentine Design. 827. Photo Album. Contrapposto. Anatomy and spirituality in the Middle AgesThe medieval jamb sculptures are almost completely symmetrical—that is one side of their body is nearly identical to the other side.

Contrapposto

They look stiff, rigid, and incapable of movement. They don't seem to belong to our world—and they're not supposed to. They're suupposed to look otherworldy and spiritual and were made for the doorway of a church. They are also expressionless, and lacking in individuality. Their bodies match the shape of the columns that they are attached to, and because they are attached, they are NOT free-standing. Contrapposto and Classical Greece Our Ancient Greek sculpture, on the other hand, IS free-standing—he was not made to fit on architecture. Renaissance art. Renaissance art is the painting, sculpture and decorative arts of that period of European history known as the Renaissance, emerging as a distinct style in Italy in about 1400, in parallel with developments which occurred in philosophy, literature, music and science.

Renaissance art

Renaissance art, perceived as a royalty of ancient traditions, took as its foundation the art of Classical antiquity, but transformed that tradition by the absorption of recent developments in the art of Northern Europe and by application of contemporary scientific knowledge. Renaissance art, with Renaissance Humanist philosophy, spread throughout Europe, affecting both artists and their patrons with the development of new techniques and new artistic sensibilities. Renaissance art marks the transition of Europe from the medieval period to the Early modern age. In many parts of Europe, Early Renaissance art was created in parallel with Late Medieval art.

By 1500 the Renaissance style prevailed. Influences[edit] Art History - Selected Artists from the Early Renaissance. Search the Collections. Renaissance. Renaissance Thomas J.

(Dubuque, Iowa: Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co., 1997) pp. 411 - 436. “Renaissance” means “rebirth” in the French language. The Renaissance was a rebirth in a second sense. The Renaissance was a rebirth of the human spirit, a rebirth of creativity. Italian Beginnings The Italian Renaissance marks an important turning point in human history. What, then, is the Renaissance and why did it begin in Italy? The Middle Ages were a relatively static period. This medieval synthesis broke down shortly after 1300. When one age ends and another begins, there are cross currents. The Renaissance started in Italy because these crises within Christendom benefitted Italy. Renaissance writers were wrong to slander the Middle Ages as a Dark Age.
