Beyond location: 7 more things you can 'check in' to - TNW Apps
Location-based services like Foursquare may have popularised the idea of ‘checking in’ using an app, but the concept has since been expanded into a number of different directions by subsequent apps from a wide range of developers. Here we take a look at some of the many things you can ‘check in’ to. One of the current hottest ‘check-in’ areas is TV. Get Glue is probably the best known app for sharing what you’re watching right now. There’s a thriving community of people checking in to what’s on that box in the corner of their room, and there are virtual stickers and even real world rewards to be won if you check in to shows that the startup has commercial partnerships with. It’s mainly US focused right now, but has users all over the world.8 Cool Marketing Campaigns Using Facebook Places
In the year or so since the launch of location-based Facebook Places , businesses have come up with some pretty creative marketing campaigns. The check-in service allows brands to build their fan base while engaging and rewarding customers. Facebook Places provides viral marketing for a company since every check-in shows up in the news feed of the user’s friends. It allows businesses to create incentives for those who come to their physical location or events. Unlike Groupon and Living Social, Facebook Places lets you choose exactly how to structure your offer with no fee.For Small Businesses, Foursquare is the New Word of Mouth - Fox Small Business Center
Once upon a time, employees would stroll into work Monday morning and gather around the water cooler to swap weekend stories. But now, thanks to social media, most people already know about their coworkers' adventures from viewing their photos, reading their tweets and spotting their foursquare 'check-ins.' Just as Facebook and Twitter revolutionized with whom and how we socialize, foursquare is now changing where we socialize. Its hyper-local business model strengthens an already symbiotic relationship between consumers and business owners. Top 5 Foursquare Mistakes Committed by Small Businesses
When Foursquare began, it was easy to wonder what the point was beyond the game. It asked people to “check in” when visiting places like shops, bars, or restaurants and then gave them a chance to compete for virtual prizes, like badges and recognition as “mayor” after visiting a place more than anyone else. Now, with more than nine million users, Foursquare is beginning to prove its value to businesses. It is becoming the rare social-media service that lets them directly analyze whether promotions lead to sales. Take RadioShack, a company aiming to survive the price wars in consumer electronics by driving in-store sales. It first partnered with Foursquare last August to offer a 10 percent discount to anyone who checked in on a phone at one of its locations and 20 percent to any RadioShack “mayor.”
